One Of A Kind Mercedes Up For Auction

Lotec Mercedes-Benz C1000

A one of a kind Mercedes supercar is expected to fetch between $1m and $1.3m at auction. The 1,000 bhp Mercedes was custom made for a business man from the United Arab Emirates in 1990 by Mercedes and Lotec, and has been called the Lotec Mercedes-Benz C1000.

The supercar only weighs 1,080kg, which is about the same weight as the average supermini. This is because the ‘C’ in the Lotec’s name stands for carbon-fibre, which was used to try and keep the weight as low as possible.

The C1000 is powered by a 5.6-litre Mercedes V8 to which two Garrett turbochargers are bolted, which makes it 1,000 brake horse power.

It will get from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and flat out will do 268mph. By contrast, the fastest car in the world when it was built in 1990 was the McLaren F1, which could only manage a paltry 140mph.

The C1000’s doors open vertically to reveal a bright red and black carbon-fibre interior. Nice.

It definitely brings to life the strap line “made of pure muscle” and it is one of the coolest car advertising concepts we have seen yet. A lot  of its success can be attributed to the level of detail that went into the paintwork on the models. This behind-the-scenes video shows the making of the advert.

Blue BMW Drivers Are Most Aggressive

Blue BMW DriversA study claims that men aged 35-50 who drive blue BMWs are the most aggressive drivers on Britain’s roads. That is, they are the likeliest road rage culprits. Drivers of Audis, Land Rovers, Subarus and Vauxhalls are also pretty angry according to the report, which surveyed 2,837 people.

The study was carried out for discount website VoucherCodesPro and found that Range Rover owners are the second most likely to lose their temper on the road. Blue was seen as the most aggressive colour, followed by black, silver, green and red.

When do you think drivers are angriest? You guessed it! Peak time for road rage is 5.45pm on a Friday during rush hour, closely followed by the miserable Monday morning commute. These are the most stressful times for drivers trying to get to and from work.

Road Rage

Of course gender was going to come in at some point, so let’s put this as diplomatically as possible. Men said they lost their temper behind the wheel seven times a month on average, while women got angry on only three occasions.

The most common expression of road rage is shouting and swearing, followed by erratic driving and obscene gestures. How do you express your road rage and are you a typically angry driver?

How to Spot a Worthwhile Classic Car

Classic Car

Classic cars are ever popular, but just how do you decide which one is for you and whether it is worth the investment? In an article for The Telegraph, Ross Bowdler has suggested other things to look for when buying a classic car. Without further ado..

Rarity

How many were made, how many are left and is it widely acknowledged as a desirable model? Crucially, are there comparative examples for sale to indicate current market value?

Provenance and history

Is this documented and undisputed and are there interesting previous owners which might enhance the value of the car outside the classic car market?

Competition history

If appropriate to the car, does it exist and has it been well documented to make it a desirable and eligible entrant for event organisers?

Condition

Is work required to make the car reach the value of the highest valued examples available, or at least to get it in good, usable condition? If a lot of restoration is required, would the car’s resulting value justify the expense?

Practicality

What can you do with the car? Could you jump in it for a Sunday morning blast without extensive preparation?

In the end, the value of a classic car is based on what someone is prepared to pay for it. Ultimately, buying a classic car is just like buying art… the real key to buy something with which you have a connection. Good luck!

Driving a Porsche with a Special Number Plate

Porsche 911 Turbo S

Car Dealer Magazine‘s Editor James Baggot recently fulfilled his all time motoring dream of driving a Porsche with a special number plate.

He drove Porsche’s fastest 997 edition – the 911 Turbo S with the famous 911 HUL number plate and said he had been looking forward to it for years.

911 HUL Number Plate

The 911 HUL private plate has been owned by Porsche for over 30 years. Anyone obsessed with car magazines will instantly recognise it as it is regularly used in press shoots.

It was first used on the original Turbo of 1975 and has, from that point onwards, traditionally been reserved for the generations of 911 Turbo press cars that have followed. That, incidentally, is a lot of 911s.

Jeremy Clarkson with 911 HUL

Jeremy Clarkson with the famous 911 HUL plate – we are not sure of the exact year. Guesses welcome!

At the end of his 7 days with the car, Baggot wrote: “It’s time for 911 HUL to return to Porsche. After a week behind the wheel of the monster I’m smitten. Yes, the ride is firm and the tyre noise a little intrusive. Granted the seats aren’t the most cosseting and the 997 interior is showing its age now the 991 has arrived.

“However, never have I driven a car quite so intoxicating, quite so full of character and quite so mind-alteringly fast as the Turbo S. The fact it was wearing one of the most iconic plates in motoring folklore simply made the whole experience all the more special.”
