Australia’s First Supercar

Australia's First Supercar

Australia’s very own supercar, the Joss JP1, is taking another run at the world stage.

With a mid- mounted all-alloy V8, a claimed top speed of around 340 km/h (211 mph), and all of the current technical innovations expected in a modern day supercar, the Joss JP1 is the culmination of years of design and development work aimed squarely at producing a world-beating exotic machine.

Despite all of this engineering work, though, the Australian design regulations are amongst the toughest and most intractable in the world, and would take more money and time to comply with than is reasonably available to a boutique auto maker. The upshot of which means that the first five vehicles built and sold by Joss will only be available as track-day cars.

No official date has been given for a possible launch or impending production. Though, based on the proposed timeline and all going to plan, it would appear that it will be somewhere around two years by the time the first new prototype is produced.

Why Maranello is considering a V6 entry-level supercar

Why Maranello is considering a V6 entry-level supercar

Ferrari is readying the next generation of supercars. There’s a corner of Maranello’s R&D skunkworks which is developing V6 power for future sports cars.

It is rumoured that the new twin-turbo V6 is a 2.9-litre unit is designed to be long-term street-legal and affordable in big growth markets such as China.

Although the power output will be determined later in the development programme, 500bhp and 450lb ft should be an achievable target for the new V6 motor.

In the end, these numbers are of strategic and political nature – if Audi can squeeze 525bhp out of a 2.5-litre five-cylinder motor, Ferrari surely could get close to 600bhp out of a 2.9-litre six.

Ferrari will unveil the turbocharged 458 Italia upgrade at the 2015 Geneva motor show, and the so-codenamed M458-T is due to last on sale until around 2019, according to Car Magazine.

The V6 comes in after that. One scenario being studied at Ferrari HQ is that the 458 successor would split into two models: a V8 engined mainstream car, plus a slightly more affordable version powered by the new six-cylinder engine.

Thanks to the fresh opportunities provided by the company’s highly flexible modular matrix, it would only be logical to make the 458 look more aggressive and overtly sporty than the leaner and slimmer 456.

There might even be a case for reviving the good old manual gearbox which could, in the 456, be a DCT-derived seven-speeder similar to the cogworks installed in the base 911.

Video: A Parade of Rare Italian Supercars

Dodge’s $63,000 Charger Hellcat Is Faster Than Legendary Supercars

Dodge's $63,000 Charger Hellcat Is Faster Than Legendary Supercars

The 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hemi Hellcat is the fastest and most powerful sedan ever to make it into mass production. With 707 horsepower and a top speed of 204 mph, its performance is world beating.

Even more impressive is the Hellcat Charger’s estimated “bargain basement” price of $63,000.

However, recent advancements in powertrain technology have caused a surge in horsepower ratings — and an abundance of mega-horsepower supercars. In that context, it may be difficult to fully appreciate the Hellcat Charger’s truly awe-inspiring performance.

To provide some perspective, here’s a rundown of the great supercars that have been bested by the Charger. Although some of the examples are from as far back as the 1990s, their blistering performance and cultural significance have not diminished.

The new Hellcat Charger isn’t necessarily better than these iconic supercars. But Dodge’s beast of a four-door does run with a pretty legendary crowd.

Revealed: How Arab playboys fly their supercars into London on chartered cargo jets

Supercars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis take to the skies each year as rich Arab playboys bring their vehicles from the Middle East to London, usually for just a few weeks over summer.

The car owners, many of them from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait, will happily pay a small fortune – in excess of £20,000 for a return journey – for their metal marvels to be flown around 3,000 miles, and often leave them parked up on the streets of Knightsbridge.

Qatar Airways is one such airline that ships the luxury cars from Doha to Heathrow. Secured to the floor of one of their Airbus A330s, the precious cargo can either be accommodated in a single row or in a side-by-side configuration.

Using their main and lower deck, the airline offers 31 positions on each flight.

Daniel Hallworth, managing director of Dan Car Logistics, which specialises in air freight, told MailOnline: ‘The Arabs often use agents to arrange their cars to be flown to the UK – and some of these guys can have two or three cars that they bring over for just one month.

‘Once here, they can legally drive it for up to two months. A lot of them tour – so they may come to London for a bit and then truck their vehicle to much sunnier places like Marbella to extend their fun.’

Mr Hallworth, whose company is based in Manchester, said that a car such as a Ferrari or McLaren can cost up to £5,000 to transport each way, while a Bugatti Veyron would be about £6,000 per journey.
