Middle East buyer snaps up 450th and final Bugatti Veyron supercar

Volkswagen has sold the 450th and final Bugatti Veyron, marking the end of one of the most exclusive supercars ever built.

The last Veyron is an open-top Grand Sport Vitesse variant, which boasts 1,200 horsepower. The car, called La Finale, will be on display next week at the Geneva Motor Show. The 450 Veyrons were sold for an average price of about €2.3 million each, Bugatti said Monday in a statement.

“An unprecedented chapter in automotive history has reached its climax,” Bugatti president Wolfgang Duerheimer said in a statement. “Even 10 years after its market launch, the Veyron remains unique in many respects.”

The final Veyron was purchased by an unidentified customer from the Middle East. About half the cars were sold in Europe, and about a quarter were delivered in the US, according to Bugatti.

VW, the world’s second-largest automaker, is working on a new Bugatti supercar and is testing at least three different concepts for a successor to the Veyron, including one with an engine as much as 25 per cent stronger than the 1,200-horsepower motor of the Grand Sport Vitesse, people familiar with the plans said in October. VW design chief Walter de Silva has said the new Bugatti could be unveiled at the end of this year or early-2016 and will be “art.”

Like the Veyron, its successor will vie for the world’s most affluent car-buyers with the likes of Italy’s Pagani Automobili, McLaren’s street cars or Koenigsegg Automotive’s Agera model. The Swedish supercar specialist will present the Agera and a new “megacar” dubbed Regera in Geneva next week.

The Veyron set industry records not just for speed, but also for losing money, according to estimates from Max Warburton, a Singapore-based analyst for Sanford Bernstein. Including development costs, VW may lose €4.6m per vehicle on the Veyron, Mr Warburton said.

“The spending they have done on every little part of the car is totally crazy, but it’s also of course setting the agenda of the supercar, the hyper-car league,” Christian Brandt, chief designer at Danish supercar maker Zenvo Automotive, said in an interview.

“You need prestige projects like this to showcase technological excellence,” said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. “Yes, it costs money, but it won’t cause VW any turbulence.”

Millionaire supercar owners caught smuggling cars to China for illegal road races

Millionaire supercar owners caught smuggling cars to China for illegal road races

A gang of 13 millionaire supercar owners who took their Ferraris, McLarens and Lamborghinis to China to take part in illegal races have been given suspended sentences after they sped along private roads at 160mph.

The gang – all men and aged between 36 and 62 –  crossed from Hong Kong to Shenzhen in southern China to stage the illegal race.

They reportedly told police they had travelled to China because the roads in Hong Kong were too narrow for racing.

Each was given a prison sentence of between one and six months, suspended for two years, at Bao’an District People’s Court after they admitted driving at 160mph on private roads. Other motorists reported their ‘sheer terror’ when they tore past.

Police seized 12 of the vehicles, which were stopped in November last year.

Van driver Wang Ho, 39, said: ‘I was doing about 100 kph (60mph) but they overtook me like I was standing still.’

He added: ‘My van literally shook when they went past me on both sides because of the speed they were doing.

‘They were going so fast their number plates were a blur.

‘I thought if they made even one small mistake at that speed they would kill me.’

Other motorists said it appeared the drivers ‘thought they were on a race track.’

The drivers have been fined around £70,000 and were warned by a judge they may not be so lucky next time.

We're the Rich Kids of Instagram... and you're just jealous!

Scrolling through their lifestyle snaps may be a little torturous for ordinary mortals, as the ‘Rich Kids of Instagram’ jet between the world’s most glamorous cities, dine at the finest restaurants and wear the most exclusive clothes.

But the young millionaires behind the internet sensation everyone loves to hate insist that they aren’t bragging – just posting average pictures of their lives like everyone else.

‘I don’t think I should be judged for posting a photo like eating caviar at Claridge’s in London while it’s okay for someone to post a picture at McDonald’s,’ argues 22-year-old Andrew Warren, scion of a New York real estate empire, who boasts that ‘all his friends have money too’.

Fast and Furious Qatar style: Millionaire businessman, 26, is addicted to supercars

Meet the young millionaire from Qatar who, at 26, has already owned a Bentley, a Ferrari and now drives a $270,000 Rolls Royce Ghost.

Mohammed Al Kubaisi quickly built up a large fortune when his father handed over the reins to the family business – and like any young man with wealth, he indulged in his passion.

But he has also opened up the world of supercars to the masses by congregating dozens of the coveted luxury vehicles at events in capital Doha.

Usually locked away in the garages of the extremely wealthy or glimpsed roaring the streets of Doha – or Knightsbridge – Mr Al Kubaisi decided to feed his addiction to supercars by gathering together various models, including McLarens, Lamborghinis and Ferraris, in one place, for fans to admire.

He describes himself as ‘a fan of supercars’ and has owned an enviable fleet, including $235,000 Bentley Continental GT, a $221,000 (£140,000) Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and a Ferrari 458 Italia worth $240,000 (£160,000).

And his current ride is a powerful Rolls Royce Ghost – which comes with an eye-watering price tag of $270,000 (£175,000)/

Mr Al Kubaisi, who owns a small but successful real estate business which specialises in rentals for expats as well as a garage, said his events have been well received by Qatar’s wealthy car enthusiasts.

From a wealthy Qatari family, he moved to Denver, Colorado, to study at the age of 18. Now, back in Qatar, he is single, and spends his time with friends, playing soccer or with his supercars.

He says the first event, in 2012, featured around 30 models which were scouted from friends and contacts – and some were even featured after being spotted on the streets of Qatar.

He said: ‘Our first event in 2012 was during Ramadan and it went well. We gathered around 30 vehicles including supercars and European models,’ said Mohammed.

‘We got all the cars from friends and contacts, and also from spotting them on the streets.

‘Our next event was held at Qatar Sports Club and was even bigger, we almost had too many cars, including McLarens, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Mercedes.’

Dubai Police’s night-time supercar procession

Dubai Police’s night-time supercar procession

There’s no point in owning a Bugatti Veyron, Mercedes SLS and a Lamborghini Aventador if you can’t show them off, right?

This is exactly why Dubai Police has decided to showcase its fleet of luxury cars in action on the city’s key roads.

The 88-second night-time video, posted on the force’s YouTube channel, begins with a wide-angle shot of the brightly lit emirate and gradually homes in on the vehicles whizzing through the city.

The cars manoeuvre among one another on Mohammed bin Zayed Boulevard before coming to a halt in front of the Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain as crowds erupt in joy.

Dubai Police said the fleet of luxury cars were to promote the image of the authorities and to encourage the public to interact with the police. A Lexus RCF, equipped with computers and cameras, is the latest vehicle to join the police fleet, which includes a McLaren MP4-12C, Aston Martin One-77, Audi R8, Bugatti Veyron, Mercedes SLS, BMW M6, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari FF, and Bentley Continental GT.

Dubai Police chief Maj Gen Khamis Al Muzeina said the fleet of cars was used to patrol heritage sites as well as other places frequented by tourists.

Carpenter makes Lamborghini style super car entirely out of Wood

A Lamborghini-loving carpenter realised he was never going to have the cash to buy a £260,000 supercar – so he made one out of WOOD.

Super car fan Yu Jietao stripped the body off an electric car then redesigned it using hand-carved rosewood.

And after he hit the road in China’s Jiangxi province, he quickly attracted media attention – and numerous offers to buy the car.

He said: “One person offered me what I would consider to be a small fortune, and more than enough to buy a real hot rod but I decided I don’t want to sell it.

“My wife really loves it as well and so we decided to keep it.”

Police have warned that technically it isn’t licensed because it was not made by an approved car manufacturer.

But that has not deterred Yu, 26, who is planning to challenge the wooden supercardecision.

He said: “I didn’t really copy any car when I made it but I guess I wanted a sort of Lamborghini feel about it.

“It is a topless roadster so isn’t suitable for all weathers, and has beetle-wing doors. It measures about four-metres-long, 1.5 metres wide and is just 1.5 metres tall.”
