A millionaire pal of Jeremy Clarkson was driving the £780,000 supercar that careered into a motor show crowd, injuring 28 people.

Multi-millionaire car fan Paul Bailey, 55, lost control of his Porsche 918 Spyder during the motor show in Malta.

Four of the injured are fighting for their lives in hospital in a critical condition and 15 others, including Mr Bailey, had to be treated in hospital.

A six-year-old girl and her mother were among the spectators seriously injured in the accident .

Witnesses said his 211mph Porsche 918 Spyder slammed into barriers after a back wheel hit the grass.

One spectator who witnessed the carnage said: “The car was speeding down the taxiway when a back wheel went on the grass.

“The car spun out of control, went through the barriers where a large crowd was watching, and into the area of the static car exhibition.

“Many people were hit, there was chaos and screams.”

Mr Bailey, from Rutland, made his fortune in telephone conferencing and sold his company for £28million in 2012.

He became the first person to own the ‘Holy Trinity’ of supercars – an £866,000 McLaren P1, a £1.2million Ferrari LaFerrari and the 918 Spyder.

Mr Bailey loaned some of his 50 supercars to Top Gear when Clarkson hosted the programme.
