The Acura NSX supercar press kits are selling for $275 on eBay

The Acura NSX supercar press kits are selling for $275 on eBay

After a decade of absence from the automotive market, the Acura NSX supercar generated much excitement when it was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Only a few days after the news broke, a number of journalists – or at least, people who were accredited as journalists at the show’s press preview on Monday and Tuesday – put their NSX press kits up for sale on eBay.

It’s common for automakers to offer elaborate press kits when they introduce new models, and the NSX kit did not disappoint. Packaged in a lovely tin box, it contains a USB thumb drive loaded with pertinent model information and a small metal model of the car.

One sold on eBay today for $167.50, and other online auctions ending later have received bids well in excess of $100. There’s even one enterprising individual offering a buy-it-now price of $250 for one of the kits.

Do you think it’s right for journalists to sell the press kits on eBay?

Official: Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025

Official: Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025

In 2025, what will large trucks look like? To answer that question, Mercedes-Benz has created its Future Truck 2025 study to provide a glimpse of the shape of things to come in the trucking industry.

Mercedes-Benz believes that in ten years’ time, trucks could be driving autonomously on highways with fuel efficiency set to improve tremendously alongside reductions in emissions.

In terms of design, the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 study combines function, efficiency and emotion in a fascinating way. As a result, it is unlike any other truck on the market.

It incorporates flowing and curved surfaces while also including a completely new lighting design. When the driver is behind the wheel and in control of the truck, the headlights and front grille are illuminated white while when in autonomous driving mode, these lights change to blue.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 study is similarly minimalist. It adopts a flowing wood panel design across the floor and passenger side of the dashboard. Gone are traditional truck controls and in their place are touchscreen displays.

If Darth Vader Had A Car…

If Darth Vader Had A Car...

If Darth Vader had a car, this concept by Ondrej Jirec would be it. Jirec is a Czech student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Its name is the Cadillac Estill, a futuristic super car concept that, according to Jirec, links to the history of the Cadillac brand but is not retro.

Here’s how he describes it:

“The desired result was to create a concept that maintains clues from the history of the Cadillac brand and introduces a futuristic and fresh vision. The history clues were a fuselage suspended between two long body sides – a good example is the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado.

“Taking this pure form study, stripping down from all details, and taking it as a building theme for the whole concept, those were the main inspiration for the development of this concept.

“The interior layout is built around the driver experience. The passenger seat is pushed slightly back so the driver can reach the feeling of being in a true race car, inspired by the Cadillac Le Mans heritage.”

Ondrej Jirec received a Mr. Otis and Mrs. Bettina Chandler full endowed scholarship from 2008 to 2013 and has worked at General Motors and Honda R&D in California, Aston Martin in the UK, and Stile Bertone in Torino, Italy.

Car Buyers Lose Out In Fuel-Test “Cheating”

Car Buyers Lose Out In Fuel-Test "Cheating" Car makers are being accused of cheating official fuel tests, which throws the impressive reduction in CO2 produced by new cars into doubt. We could be paying fuel bills up to 25 per cent higher than those claimed by official tests for our ‘fuel efficient’ cars because makers are abusing the system, according to a leading transport pressure group. The criticism comes as new European figures show official carbon dioxide figures for new cars sold in the region last year dropped to 127g/km, equivalent to an 56.5mpg average.

That means that, on paper at least, makers have already exceeded 2015 targets to cut the average to 130g/km. But this is nothing like what owners achieve in real-life driving, according to the Brussels-based Transport & Environment (T&E) group, which has calculated the real average is 45mpg. “Fuel efficiency standards…are being undermined by an obsolete test,” said T&E’s clean vehicles manager Greg Archer in a statement. “The test procedures are a Swiss cheese, full of loopholes, that carmakers exploit to exaggerate improvements in fuel economy and emissions.” Source: The Telegraph

The Mercedes 007-Style Smartwatch

Mercedes Benz Smart Watch

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a new 007-style smartwatch to provide better connectivity between drivers and their cars. The technology uses the internet to communicate with the car and provides feedback on vehicle diagnostics.

Mercedes drivers wearing the watch can check important information like fuel level, door-lock status, and vehicle location remotely. When inside the car the smartwatch is also able to alert drivers to potential hazards such as road traffic accidents and stalled vehicles via vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication.

On top of this, drivers can customise the three buttons on the watch to activate their favourite Digital DriveStyle app features like reporting hazards, auto-routing, Siri activation, remote-controlling media, or quickly showing nearby traffic conditions.

The prototype watch will be shown at the upcoming 2014 International CES in Las Vegas, the largest consumer electronics show in the world.

Mercedes isn’t the first manufacturer to announce its interest in developing a smartwatch. Nissan unveiled the Nissan Nismo smartwatch ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, which was the first attempt from a car manufacturer to allow drivers to monitor vehicle information from a watch.

There is no official word from Mercedes on when this technology will be available or how much it will cost. More information on the smartwatch is likely to following its unveiling at the CES show in January.
