A ride with diamond eyes: The first Arab supercar

Asking the top speed of the world’s first Arab supercar is beside the point. The 0-60 times, or horsepower, too. Those numbers won’t matter by the time you notice the seats are stitched with gold thread and headlights are trimmed with diamonds.
When did the company think, “diamonds, what we need is headlights made of diamonds”?

Ralph R. Debbas, W Motors CEO, laughs: “Diamonds in the headlights are something we don’t need at all, actually. It was a true marketing gimmick that we integrated. But people talk about it.”

W Motors styles itself as the Arab world’s first supercar manufacturer, and has major plans to build its name in the oil-rich Middle East, which has so far lacked a credible motor industry.

Its first creation is the ferociously styled $3.4 million Lykan Hypersport, built to attract attention and invite Instagram photos — “in a crazy way, in a disruptive way” — in a market already crowded with ultra-exclusive autos.

The Hypersport ticks each of the hypercar performance boxes. If you must ask, it has a 3.7-litre 780bhp, twin-turbo flat-six which can go from 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds (faster than the power-focused Lamborghini Aventador) and reach a top speed of 395 km/h.

But Debbas knows better than anyone that buyers chasing the top hypercar specs (and have a few million to spare), are already spoilt by the likes of the face-peeling Pagani Huayra, Koenigsegg Agera, or Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

That’s not the point, he insists: “My client already has a Pagani or a Koenniggseg, and he wants something different.”

“When you get into something like this hypercar, it’s really about a luxury lifestyle,” explains Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst at industry experts IHS Automotive. “It’s something that somebody would buy in place of yet another house somewhere, and it’s a whole other stratosphere than typical transportation.”

For W Motors, the car itself is just part of the package. Buyers also get a global servicing system, where the press of a button in-car summons a technical advisor to come to their aid, explains Debbas. And if needed “flying doctors” — a team of W Motors-trained engineers — will fly to wherever you are in the world.

Supercar Asbos: will Kensington and Chelsea Council’s crack down on noisy million pound motors make London less colourful?

Supercar Asbos: will Kensington and Chelsea Council's crack down on noisy million pound motors make London less colourful?

Curbing anti-social supercars in London’s most affluent areas will no doubt make our streets quieter. But will they become less colourful too? Phil Clarke from the London Evening Standard investigates…

Power-sliding round the corner, a pearl-coloured Maserati with diplomatic plates screeches off Hyde Park Corner and onto Grosvenor Crescent, an AMG Mercedes E63 hot in pursuit. With a crunch of gears and a perfectly executed five-point-turn, we add our slightly ailing white Nissan to the fray. Finally we’re on the trail of London’s super rich boy racers.

The Maserati leads the way as they speed onto Pont Street. They cross Sloane Street and continue up towards Beauchamp Place, breaking left onto Walton Street as the Merc, sporting Russian number plates, attempts to undertake, cutting across the pavement. They stop at traffic lights, and both cars impatiently rev their throttles, sending pigeons fluttering.

Our people carrier, panting from trying to keep up, whirrs painfully. On green they’re off again, up Pelham Street and past South Kensington station. The AMG driver nearly loses control as he skids onto Onslow Square, just missing a grey delivery van. Unwilling to risk following further, we fall back and London returns to it’s normal pace, the unmistakable howl of exhaust reverb disappearing into the distance.

It is this noise that Kensington and Chelsea Council wants to stop. The last few years have seen a rapid rise in the phenomenon of wealthy car enthusiasts using the roads of Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Kensington and Belgravia as an unofficial street circuit. As prestigious as Monte Carlo, yet as accessible as a drive down the shops — if your local stores are Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana, that is.

The cars themselves are expensive, powerful and highly customised. Million pound cars capable of speeds over 200mph, clad in chrome wraparounds costing tens of thousands vie for pole position with Boris buses and Ocado delivery men.

The council has responded with “car asbos”, Public Spaces Protection Orders, which will be imposed on anyone racing, revving or playing loud music from their cars in the streets around the spiritual home of the London supercar scene: Harrods.

I spot a jewel-encrusted Mercedes, exactly the sort of thing that must send council employees apoplectic, and wait to meet its owner. It’s a thing of strange beauty, like the end-of-term prank on the boss’s car at a disco ball factory. Or possibly a Damien Hirst installation circa 2007.

Finally it pays off and I hear keys jangle, but the owner isn’t quite what I was expecting. Not a Saudi Prince or Russian oligarch, ready to terrorise the local population with their wheel spins and endless revolutions, but a 21-year-old female fashion student.

Puppy-loving and self-confessed careful driver, Daria Radionova was given the car, a Mercedes CLS 350 worth £50,000, as a birthday present from her parents, who still live in their native Moldova. It has one million Swarovski crystals attached, individually stuck on by hand at a cost of over £35,000. “I brought experts over from Russia. There were four people doing it, and it took two months sticking them on one by one,” she explains.

The one thing I’ve been unable to find is any real evidence of the Arab and Russian wide-boy car fanatics of the kind Nick Paget-Brown, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, warned of when he told the Standard: “the area has become a destination for boy-racers from the Gulf states”.

After several hours pacing the pavements of Hans Town I am yet to see anything but stationary supercars, the odd Saudi or Kuwaiti numberplate but certainly none of the aggression and antisocial behaviour the council hope to outlaw. Each car is constantly surrounded by tourists, snapping and selfie-ing away. While we were chatting to Daria one man came up to her driveable-glitterball to say thank you, telling us he brought his young son up to Harrods just to show him all the cars.

But then came the car chase, and having witnessed first-hand the reckless driving, not to mention racket, I can see why the council is keen to act. Yet thinking about Daria’s outrageous vehicle and the tourists milling round her, I wonder if our streets may be about to become a little quieter, but a bit less colourful too.

Who cares about the congestion charge? How the super-rich get around London

From a blinged-up Rolls Royce to a Mercedes covered with Swarovski crystals, these pictures give a glimpse of how the super-rich like to travel around London.

The supercars have caught the eye of passers-by, with the garish Mercedes S-Class and a Rolls Royce from Dubai popping up on the streets of Knightsbridge.

A silver Porsche 918 Spyder with Saudi Arabian license plates has also been garnering attention.

But the Mercedes S-Class doesn’t seem to be in quite as good condition as when it was last pictured on MailOnline, with some of the crystals no longer there.

The 2014 CLS 350 used to be owned by Russian business student Daria Radionova until she sold it for £155,000 on eBay last October. It is often seen parked in exclusive parts of London.

A team from Russia had spent 12 hours a day for two months working on customising the car, and Ms Radionova said last September that she was ‘really happy’ with it.

The then 21-year-old added: ‘It gets lots of attention from people walking by and in cars. Sometimes I think they might crash.’

Knightsbridge has become known in recent years for Arab playboys speeding around in cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

‘Supercar season’ has long been the domain of the super-rich – but more Arab visitors to the UK are now entering the fast lane by hiring luxury motors for a fraction of the cost.

Visitors from the Arabian Gulf are known for showing off their high-value motors over summer, with some spending up to Dh70,000 to fly their cars to London for just a few weeks.

Supercar marques ranging from Aston Martin to Bugatti were spotted in areas like Knightsbridge and Mayfair last year, sporting number-plates from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

Some local residents have complained about the annual “invasion”, saying that the cars are noisy, and that some drivers are dangerous or do not pay local parking fines and speeding tickets.

The London-based Signature Car Hire, which has one of the largest fleets of luxury cars in the UK, says it has seen a “growing market” in bookings from Middle Eastern customers.

Dee Bhatia, the firm’s founder and chief executive, said his customer base has included royals from the UAE and Qatar, although he declined to specify names.

“They are discerning clients who know exactly what they want. We have been known to buy a car specifically because a VIP client requested it,” Bhatia said.

Rival UK-based rental firm Supercar Experiences also reports a steady increase in customers from the Middle East.

It offers models like the Porsche 911 Carrera or Range Rover Vogue to hire for around Dh1,400 a day, while the Ferrari 430 Spider F1 goes for £595 (Dh3,300).

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700 — the firm’s most expensive car available for general hire — is available for a whopping £1,995.00 per 24 hours.

Nik Hardwick, managing director of Supercar Experiences, said the firm had seen a lot a clients from the UAE, mainly during the summer months.

“We’ve had the princes, the sheikhs, the billionaires,” he said. “They’ve all got cars back home. But a lot of people decide to hire rather than bringing their own cars over.”

Customised supercars belonging to wealthy Arab playboys line London’s most upmarket streets

Customised supercars belonging to wealthy Arab playboys line London's most upmarket streets

Expensive Arab-owned supercars – many of which have been expensively customised – have been spotted all over London’s most upmarket streets, and their drivers don’t think twice about parking on double yellow lines.

Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Bugattis are among the cars seen cruising around west and central London this summer as rich Qataris, Saudis, Emiratis and Kuwaitis move to Britain to escape the Middle East’s baking mid-summer months.

Among the supercars spotted include a £2.5million premium LaFerrari, £2million Bugatti Veyron and £700,000 McLaren seen parallel parked on double yellow lines outside five-star Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge last night.

Gary Tolson, sales manager at luxury car dealership, Tom Hartley, said: ‘It is extremely unusual seeing four of the most expensive cars in the world all parked next to each other. Many of the supercars you see around central London at the moment have been modified with paint jobs costing anything up to £30,000. A lot of them have also been given different wheels.’

A £350,000 Rolls Royce Phantom, customised with a £30,000 chrome paint job and expensive wheels, was also seen outside The Dorchester in Mayfair. Mr Tolson said: ‘This one has been really pumped up with huge wheels and paintwork which would have cost thousands.’

It was parked next to a bright orange £300,000 Lamborghini Aventador and a £270,000 Rolls Royce Ghost. The luxury cars are flown distances of around 3,000 miles in planes such as the Qatar Airways Airbus A330.
