Audi has just launched its second-generation R8 but the old one still has plenty of life left in it, especially if you modify the heck out of it.

Here’s a first-generation R8 V10 that’s been modified by America’s own AMS Performance. The car is strapped to a dyno and as you’ll soon see after hitting play it shoots some pretty massive flames from its exhaust once it’s on the boil.

The guys at AMS have added a custom twin-turbocharger setup to the range-topping R8’s 5.2-liter V-10. There’s a lengthy list of additional upgrades including a new intake manifold, reinforcements for the stock seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, a new fuel pump and a new air-to-water intercooler system.

According to AMS, the setup is already delivering more than 1,300 horsepower to the wheels. The next stop for this R8 is a trial by fire at none other than the Texas Speed Syndicate Texas Invitational – King of the Streets event.

Self-driving Supercar: Audi unveils electric R8 e-tron that reaches 60mph in 3.9 seconds

Self-driving Supercar: Audi unveils electric R8 e-tron that reaches 60mph in 3.9 seconds

Audi has unveiled what could be the fastest self-driving car yet to be built and Audi says the concept vehicle will act as a ‘high-tech mobile laboratory’ for testing its technologies.

It boasts two electric motors, can go 0 to 60mph in under four seconds and can reach a top speed of 155mph (250km/h) – and it can drive itself. The vehicle uses laser scanners, video cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors to build up a detailed picture of its surroundings allowing it to navigate through traffic.

While not the only company working on self driving cars, it seems Audi is attempting to build one of the fastest. The company claims its concept vehicle has two battery-powered motors that deliver 456 horse power, allowing it to travel from 0 to 62mph (0 to 100km/h) in just 3.9 seconds.

The name, shape and colour of the R8 e-tron were inspired 1982 science fiction film Tron, by Steven Lisberger. A sequel called Tron: Legacy was released in 2010.

A statement released by the company said: ‘The R8 e-tron piloted driving technical study is equipped with all of the functions of piloted driving.Data is acquired from the interplay of an array of sensors: a new type of laser scanner, several video cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors at the front and rear.

‘Based on signals from these sources, the central driver assistance control unit (zFAS), a compact central computer, computes a comprehensive picture of the vehicle’s environment.’ Audi also said it has used T-shaped batteries to help maximise the space inside the car and lower the centre of gravity.

The rear of the car is made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer and the luggage compartment walls are corrugated to absorb ‘extreme amounts of energy’ in case of a rear-end collision.

Le Mans-Inspired Audi Hybrid Supercar Back On The Table?

Le Mans-Inspired Audi Hybrid Supercar Back On The Table?

Back in 2012, Audi’s then R&D chief Wolfgang Dürheimer let it be known that he wanted to develop a diesel-electric hybrid supercar to sit above the R8 in Audi’s performance lineup.

The car would have borrowed technology from Audi’s hugely-successful R18 e-tron quattro Le Mans prototype—along with its styling—and would have targeted the latest generation of hybrid supercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

A year later, Dürheimer was dismissed from his post at Audi and reassigned to the role of CEO of Bentley and Bugatti. And with him went any chance of a new hybrid supercar from Audi. Or at least that’s what we thought.

Sweden’s Auto Motor and Sport, citing an inside source at the automaker, reports that a new supercar positioned above the R8 has been given the green light. To be called the R10, a prototype is said to have already been developed and test-driven by senior management.

The key to gaining approval, according to the report, was the ability to share the technology behind the car with other Volkswagen Group brands, namely, Bentley and Lamborghini. There’s a chance Porsche could even use the car’s architecture, expected to be a carbon fiber monocoque, for a supercar positioned between its 911 Turbo S and 918 Spyder.

Production of the alleged Audi R10 is slated to begin in 2016.

New Cars To Look Out For In 2014

There are some great cars to look forward to in 2014, so if you’re in the market for a new one it might be worth holding out!

It’s official. 2014 is going to be a great year for motoring. Never-before-seen models and new names will combine with the familiar to bring us a generous range of choice.

Lucky for you, we’ve put together a list of the ones you should know about…

BMW Active Tourer (Due Summer):

BMW Active Tourer

The 2 Series Active Tourer will be the first-ever front-wheel-drive BMW when it arrives late in 2014. Despite sharing a name with the 2 Series Coupe, the Active Tourer will use a platform from the new MINI, called UKL1.

Ford Mondeo (Due Autumn):

Ford Mondeo

There will be a range of new engines, including a 1.5-litre turbo petrol and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost. Diesel options will be 1.5 and 2.0-litre TDCis, with at least one emitting less than 100g/km of CO2.

Fiat 500X (Due Summer):

Fiat 500X

The latest member of the Fiat 500 family is set to be a small crossover, built to rival cars like the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur.

Nissan Qashqai (Due February):

Nissan Qashqai 2014The first-generation, British-built Qashqai was not only a money-spinner for Nissan, but also set a trend in the industry. Yet with so many new rivals, the Qashqai MkII faces a harder time. Refinement is said to be much improved, giving the Qashqai a more grown-up feel, while the raft of new technology includes an electronic differential that brakes the inside wheel in corners to maximise grip.

Audi Q7 (Due October):

Audi Q7

The new Audi Q7 is significant for several reasons – for starters, it will debut a new three-dimensional grille that will be applied to all future Audi SUVs. The new Q7 will feature full LED headlights and 4G connectivity as options. Like the Range Rover Sport, a third row of seats will also be offered, while four, six and eight-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel engines will be fitted, along with a Q7 e-tron plug-in hybrid.

SEAT Leon Cupra (Due March):

SEAT Leon Cupra

The Cupra should outmuscle the 265bhp Renaultsport Mégane and 247bhp Ford Focus ST, although it can’t match the 276bhp Astra VXR. It should get all that power on to the road, too, as it’s available with the same optional front differential as the flagship Golf.

Audi A3 Cabriolet (Due April):

Audi A3 Cabriolet

The Audi A3 Cabriolet will go up against the likes of the VW Golf Cabriolet when it arrives in showrooms next April. But unlike the Golf – which loses its roof yet keeps its gawky hatchback shape – the drop-top A3 now comes with a sleek new saloon-based body.

VW e-Golf (Due Spring):

VW e-Golf

The new e-Golf follows hot on the heels of the e-up! city car, and although it’s not the first or even the most innovative electric family hatch, it could be the car that launches the technology into the mainstream. Powered by a newly developed electric motor that produces the equivalent of 114bhp and 270Nm of torque, the car can match most petrol and diesel Golfs for acceleration.

Jag F-Type Coupe (Due Spring):

Jag F-Type Coupe 2014

It’s probably the best-looking Jaguar in a generation, and the F-Type Coupe promises to deliver even more driving thrills than the brilliant soft-top. It carries over two engines from the Roadster – two supercharged V6s – while topping the Coupe line-up is a new F-Type R. This will use the same fettled V8 as the XFR-S supersaloon, sending 542bhp to the rear wheels and taking the two-door from 0-60mph in four seconds flat.

Lamborghini Huracan (Due June):

Lambo Huracan

After 10 years on sale and endless special editions, Lamborghini is finally poised to release a successor to its 10-year-old Gallardo supercar. As in the car it replaces, the Huracan’s driving experience will be dominated by a mid-mounted V10, although here it will be tuned to delivered more than 600bhp.

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe (Due Summer):

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

The expansion of the new 4 Series range will continue next year, with BMW set to introduce a new four-door version of the sleek 3 Series-based coupe. The 4 Series Gran Coupe will follow its 6 Series big brother, with a more rakish appearance and sportier approach than a regular 3 Series, but greater practicality than the standard two-door 4 Series.

Lexus RC (Due Winter):

Lexus RC

Lexus is taking the fight to the BMW 4 Series with its attempt at a svelte two-door coupe in the shape of the RC. The name stands for Racing Coupe, and it leaves you in no doubt about what this car is designed to do.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe (Due Summer):

Mercedes S-Class Coupe

The S-Class Coupe was previewed as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, and it’s set to be revealed in full production form at the Geneva show in March.

Saying Goodbye To The Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini Gallardo

It is with great sadness that we announce the final Lamborghini Gallardo has finished production in Sant’ Agata, ending the line of the manufacturer’s most successful car. During its time this car captured the imagination of the super car enthusiast like many others could only dream of.

This number plate is for sale – click image for details

The Gallardo immediately found popularity after its launch in 2003, with its good looks, V10 engine and four-wheel drive. It’s said its V10 engine howls like no other supercar’s, and yet it it not an intimidating car to drive. Even your mother could drive it, not that you’d ever let her!

Lamborghini Gallardo

During its 10-year run, 14,022 Gallardos were built, dwarfing numbers of all other cars built by the iconic supercar manufacturer. The fastest Gallardos were the Super Trofeo Stradale and the Squadra Corsa, which were still capable of putting up a great fight against the much younger Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren 12C.

The Gallardo was launched to coincide with Lamborghini’s 40th anniversary, and was the second all-new model under Audi’s ownership of the company. Underneath its radical body was an aluminium spaceframe and V10 engine, which sent its power through all four wheels, and conceptually, its design was evolved into the Audi R8.

Lamborghini Gallardo

The final Gallardo was an LP 570-4 Spyder Performante. The Gallardo’s production line in Sant’Agata will remain quiet now for some months, as its replacement isn’t due to arrive until the second half of 2014.

Fifty Shades Of Audi

Fifty Shades Of Audi

Forget anything else you have heard about Fifty Shades of Grey. What people don’t mention is that the protagonist Mr Christian Grey boasts an enviable collection of motors… and most of them are Audis!

The Audi R8 Spyder, Audi A3 and the Audi Quattro SUV all feature in the books, but Audi was not actually involved in this highly profitable product placement. It was all for free.

Bestselling author E.L.James simply chose the brand for its quality and luxury value, finding it most suitable for the ridiculously handsome and wealthy Christian Grey.

What’s more – she isn’t even an Audi owner or huge fan herself. Apparently she drives a Mini and her husband drives a Volkswagon Touareg.

It should be noted that during the course of the three books, a couple other cars get mentions too; the Saab 9-3 was purchased for Ana after her Audi A3 was damaged, and her best friend Katherine drives a Mercedes CLK. But the Audi gets most of the limelight.

The books are estimated to have sold over 30 million e-book and print copies in English alone, with book rights sold in several countries. Funnily enough, this seems to coincide with Audi’s record sales results.

Audi says it doesn’t have any data that proves that it’s reaching more women or seeing a rise in sales as a direct result of “50 Shades,” but they’re convinced that the halo effect has been be pretty significant.

So, let this be a lesson to all high end car brands. Stay true to your brand positioning as the luxury car of choice for users who want both design and performance, and be sure to include potential bestselling authors in your target audience.

Mobile Phones Disguised As Car Key Fobs

mobile phones disguised as car key fobs

These strange looking mobile phones have started emerging in the UK market, disguised as car key fobs. Officials are already considering banning them, but who would want to buy one anyway?

Marketed as “the world’s smallest mobiles”, the devices are available from mainstream shopping channels such as Amazon and eBay and feature logos from brands including BMW, Volkswagen, Bentley, Audi and Porsche. It’s doubtful that the manufacturers have given permission for this though.

You might think it’s a lot of effort to go through to try and get away with speaking on the phone whilst driving, have these people not heard of hands free sets?? Well apparently the ‘phone fobs’ have been advertised with prisoners in mind, as having a mobile phone in jail is an offense.

The product description of one device sold via Amazon states that it features “very very very low metal contact badges [which] can be removed due to metal content alarm”, while another says the fob is “easily concealable”.

Mobile Phones Designed To Look Like Car Key Fobs

More than 7,000 phones and Sim cards were confiscated in prisons in England and Wales last year. The latest key fob mobile phone has the potential to increase the number of mobiles in prisons simply by the nature of the design and size.

The government is discussing the issue with the National Trading Standards Board and the Serious Organised Crime Agency, and the NTSB has asked retailers to stop selling the ‘phone fobs’. The POA – a prison officer’s trade union has warned that prisoners found in possession of a mobile phone should be prosecuted.
