Who cares about the congestion charge? How the super-rich get around London

Who cares about the congestion charge? How the super-rich get around London

From a blinged-up Rolls Royce to a Mercedes covered with Swarovski crystals, these pictures give a glimpse of how the super-rich like to travel around London.

The supercars have caught the eye of passers-by, with the garish Mercedes S-Class and a Rolls Royce from Dubai popping up on the streets of Knightsbridge.

A silver Porsche 918 Spyder with Saudi Arabian license plates has also been garnering attention.

But the Mercedes S-Class doesn’t seem to be in quite as good condition as when it was last pictured on MailOnline, with some of the crystals no longer there.

The 2014 CLS 350 used to be owned by Russian business student Daria Radionova until she sold it for £155,000 on eBay last October. It is often seen parked in exclusive parts of London.

A team from Russia had spent 12 hours a day for two months working on customising the car, and Ms Radionova said last September that she was ‘really happy’ with it.

The then 21-year-old added: ‘It gets lots of attention from people walking by and in cars. Sometimes I think they might crash.’

Knightsbridge has become known in recent years for Arab playboys speeding around in cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Velvet Rolls Royce: £300k supercar given furry makeover

Velvet Rolls Royce: £300k supercar given furry makeover

Velvet cars appear the latest craze for the super rich after this Rolls Royce was spotted in London.

Passers-by stopped to stroke the £300,000 supercar outside Harrods in swanky Knightsbridge.

The durable fabric is supposed to be weather resistant for those with a spare £3,000 and want their motor to stand out.

Christmas shoppers stopped and stared at the Phantom drophead coupe and took to Twitter to post pictures of it online.

It comes after a black velvet Porsche became an internet sensation when it was seen in the capital last summer.

Created by Velvet Car, a French company specialising in luxurious films and accessories, the service involves ‘wrapping’ the cars in a durable and weather resistant fibre.

A spokesman for the firm, which supplies the material to garages in the UK and overseas, said that the material, called Velvet Elite 9100, allows car owners to better express their style.

The fibre comes in a range of colours – including fuchsia pink and orange – and is available for all vehicle types.

It is coated with special adhesives and durable textile fibers to withstand severe weather condition.

The material will last roughly three years and, if the mystery owner has a change of heart, the wrap can be removed by professionals restoring the car to a just off the production line state.

It can be cleaned by hand or using a normal jet wash, without requiring any special products.

A British company, Raccoon, was responsible for the UK’s first velvet-covered car and has completed eight wrappings – mainly for customers who were looking to stand out.

Spokeswoman Alison Clark said: “It tends to be people looking to make a statement.”

Video: Stunt Driver Sets New World Record For Tightest Parallel Park

Video: Stunt Driver Sets New World Record For Tightest Parallel Park

Remember your driving test? Parallel parking probably seemed like the hardest part of getting a license, but there are some that have almost made it a competitive sport.

Yes, the Guinness World Record for parallel parking has been hotly contested in recent years. Chinese stunt driver Han Yue recently regained the title of most-precise parker after losing it to a pair of British brothers last year.

Yue broke the record in a MINI Cooper S during the recent China Drift Championship event at Chongqing Olympic Park, sliding into a space just 8 centimeters (about 3.1 inches) longer than the car.

That beats the 5.16 inches set by Alastair Moffatt in an original Mini. That happened on the same day his brother John beat Yue’s original record, but now Yue is back on top and it looks like he might be there for some time.

The dramatic sliding seen in the video isn’t just for showing off, either. With so little clearance, reversing a car into the space the conventional way simply won’t work. With this latest record, it seems like there’s as little room for advancement as their is between the parked MINIs’ bumpers.

It’s also somewhat ironic that, while professional drivers are competing to accomplish the tightest parking jobs, the number of regular drivers that can competently parallel park could very well decrease as electronic aids take over much of the work.

In 2025, what will large trucks look like? To answer that question, Mercedes-Benz has created its Future Truck 2025 study to provide a glimpse of the shape of things to come in the trucking industry.

Mercedes-Benz believes that in ten years’ time, trucks could be driving autonomously on highways with fuel efficiency set to improve tremendously alongside reductions in emissions.

In terms of design, the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 study combines function, efficiency and emotion in a fascinating way. As a result, it is unlike any other truck on the market.

It incorporates flowing and curved surfaces while also including a completely new lighting design. When the driver is behind the wheel and in control of the truck, the headlights and front grille are illuminated white while when in autonomous driving mode, these lights change to blue.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 study is similarly minimalist. It adopts a flowing wood panel design across the floor and passenger side of the dashboard. Gone are traditional truck controls and in their place are touchscreen displays.

Say Hello To The Exagon Furtive-EGT EV Supercar

Say Hello To The Exagon Furtive-EGT EV Supercar

The French company Exagon is making news with its impressive EV the Furtive-eGT. The Furtive-eGT has been around in concept form since 2010 and a few may even have been delivered.

Now it is on its way to the Salute to Style at the Hurlingham Club in London as Exagon appears ready to go into serial production.

Technically the Furtive-eGT is an impressive beast. The car combines an extremely lightweight composite body weighing just 274 pounds, and an incredibly stiff carbon fiber-honeycomb monocoque of the same variety found on F1 cars.

These lightweight bones are powered by some serious electric muscle. Two Siemens electric motors produce a total of 400 horsepower at the rear wheels, good for 0-62 mph in 3.5 tire squealing seconds.

Worryingly Exagon hasn’t said what kind of range we can expect from the SAFT sourced lithium-ion batteries. Hopefully that is because testing just hasn’t been completed rather than furtiveness about the truth.

Women Prefer Men In Black Ford Pickups, Men Prefer Women In Red BMW Sports Cars

Ford Pickup

When buying a new car, what the opposite sex will think of it is probably way down the list of priorities under fuel economy, gadgets, features, etc.

A survey by Insure.com found that women say attractive men tend to drive black Ford pickup trucks, whilst men report that attractive women drive red BMW sports cars.

The survey of 2,000 men and women asked what type, brand and colour of vehicle are driven by the most fetching members of the opposite sex.

Please note that this was a US survey, so here in the UK the results would probably be slightly different.

What Women Prefer Men to Drive

Among women, 32% said that they found men who drove pickup trucks to be most attractive. Men driving sports cars came in a reasonably close second at 27%. SUVs (16%t), sedans (11%), and hybrid/electric vehicles (4% rounded out the top five.

In terms of brands, women were more divided, though Ford gained the most up-votes at 16%, followed by Chevrolet and Porsche. And when it came to the colour of a prospective mate’s ride, women far and away chose black (53%) as the sexiest colour. Silver took home the silver medal, with 16% of the vote.

Men were also more upscale in their choice of brands than women were. BMW landed in the top spot, earning 16% of the vote, followed by Mercedes-Benz (14% and Porsche (10%). And on the colour front, men showed a distinct preference for red, with 40% pegging that as their favourite car colour for women. Black (23%) and silver (14%) followed.

Supercar Exhausts Make Stylish iPhone Speakers

iPhone Speaker Supercar Exhausts

These iPhone speakers made of supercar exhausts should be on every car lover’s wish list. Sound gadgets need to produce great sound, but they also need to be a stylish piece of furniture and these Ferrari exhaust pipe speakers answer yes to all of the above.

iXoost, an Italy-based company, is responsible for the unique design behind the Ferrari exhaust pipe sound dock. The docking stations are being offered in either eight speakers, 10 speakers or 12 speakers.

iXoost also offers its own music playing app, designed to complement the speaker system. With Coordinated graphics and technical HQs, the app matches the custom design of each recycled exhaust.

The pipes are taken from original classics such as F1 racing classics like the 1978 Cosworth DFV, 2006 Renault RS26, 2007 Ferrari 056 and more.

Replacing the original output of Italian purring, these speakers will provide blaring 140 watt sub-woofers and 70 watt speakers, available in six colors and several finishes.

Even though these come in at around at a pricey $6,900 we think they are worth every penny. Here are some more pictures:

Fifty Shades Of Audi

Fifty Shades Of Audi

Forget anything else you have heard about Fifty Shades of Grey. What people don’t mention is that the protagonist Mr Christian Grey boasts an enviable collection of motors… and most of them are Audis!

The Audi R8 Spyder, Audi A3 and the Audi Quattro SUV all feature in the books, but Audi was not actually involved in this highly profitable product placement. It was all for free.

Bestselling author E.L.James simply chose the brand for its quality and luxury value, finding it most suitable for the ridiculously handsome and wealthy Christian Grey.

What’s more – she isn’t even an Audi owner or huge fan herself. Apparently she drives a Mini and her husband drives a Volkswagon Touareg.

It should be noted that during the course of the three books, a couple other cars get mentions too; the Saab 9-3 was purchased for Ana after her Audi A3 was damaged, and her best friend Katherine drives a Mercedes CLK. But the Audi gets most of the limelight.

The books are estimated to have sold over 30 million e-book and print copies in English alone, with book rights sold in several countries. Funnily enough, this seems to coincide with Audi’s record sales results.

Audi says it doesn’t have any data that proves that it’s reaching more women or seeing a rise in sales as a direct result of “50 Shades,” but they’re convinced that the halo effect has been be pretty significant.

So, let this be a lesson to all high end car brands. Stay true to your brand positioning as the luxury car of choice for users who want both design and performance, and be sure to include potential bestselling authors in your target audience.
