China jails two 'Fast & Furious' supercar drivers

A court has sentenced two young men to up to five months in jail for dangerous driving after they crashed a Lamborghini and a Ferrari in a late-night car chase through Beijing.

Pictures of the high-performance cars’ mangled wreckage in a tunnel in the Chinese capital provoked intense public interest, especially when police announced the men were unemployed.

The Chaoyang District Court in Beijing found Tang Wentian, 21, and Yu Muchun, 20, guilty of dangerously operating motor vehicles, a court statement said.

Tang was sentenced to five months in prison and fined 10,000 yuan ($1,600), while Yu was jailed for four months and given an 8,000 yuan fine.

The court statement said both men indicated they would not appeal.

The official news agency Xinhua described the accident last month as the result of a “real-life ‘Fast and Furious’ drag race in downtown Beijing”.

The court said Tang’s green Lamborghini reached speeds of over 179 kilometres (111 miles) per hour and that Yu’s red Ferrari went over 165kph (102mph) in their race on the rainy night of April 11.

Reckless driving is not uncommon within the district, with more than 110 cases filed so far this year, most of which involve use of alcohol and men in their 20s and 30s, the court said.

Supercar Wedding in Shanghai, China

Supercar Wedding in Shanghai, China

We recently saw a Supercar Wedding in Jinan, but that was peasant stuff compared with how they do such supercar things in Shanghai.

More than fifty speedy and super expensive vehicles gathered for a massive celebration as an equally massive restaurant in the suburbs.

All cars got a red heard made of red roses on the bonnet. Kitch is Glorious! On the first photo a flashy McLaren 650S in bright orange.

Moving down the line with a white Ferrari 458, a blue Aston Martin Rapide, and a red Bentley Continental GT.

We also spotted a white 650S, white Maserati GranTurismo, Pink Ferrari 458 Spider, and a red Ferrari 599.

It won’t be easy to find your Rolls-Royce Ghost on the parking lot! There were five at least, and a Bentley Mulsanne too.

Gangs of wealthy super-car drivers transform Beijing streets into illegal race track

Gangs of wealthy super-car drivers transform Beijing streets into illegal race track

Pensioners in north Beijing are pleading with the authorities for help after the streets around their homes were transformed into an illegal race track by gangs of wealthy young drivers in super-cars.

A spectacular weekend crash involving a sludge green Lamborghini and a “go fast” red Ferrari has thrown a spotlight on the extreme street racing taking place at the heart of China’s capital.

But residents of Fenglin Luzhou, a neighbourhood next to the boulevard where the crash took place, say they have been living with nightly races for years.

“I feel angry and helpless. Somebody must do something,” said Zhao Lihua, a 64-year-old pensioner whose 11th floor flat gives her a front-row seat to the terrifying high-speed races involving supercars and super-bikes piloted by super-rich Chinese.

Beijing’s boy racers began their contests at around 10 p.m. most nights, locals said. “These racers have no character at all,” said Mrs Zhao. “They are abominable. They cannot be the children of ordinary people.”

Until just a few decades ago the streets of Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai were clogged with bicycles.

But the country’s economic boom means the roads are now peppered with a multicoloured troop of “super luxury” cars, status symbols for a new generation of Chinese capitalists.

Of the 7,318 Ferraris shipped around the world in 2012, 784 went to China. Two hundred and five Lamborghinis came to China in 2013, out of a total of 2,121.

Some of these vehicles have made high-speed trips to the scrapyard. Last February one person was killed when a Ferrari crashed and burst into flames on a motorway near Beijing’s international airport.

Two years earlier, the 23-year-old son of Ling Jihua, a former senior aide to the then president Hu Jintao, died in a 4am crash involving his black Ferrari 458 Spider. Two female passengers were seriously injured.

In the absence of government action, the residents of Fenglin Luzhou were taking measures of their own, according to Mrs Mi. One set of neighbours recently called in the builders. “They installed triple glazing.”

China’s First Supercar debuts on the Shanghai Auto Show

This is the Qiantu K50 Event!, China’s first home-grown electric supercar, which debuted on the Shanghai Auto Show. The Qiantu K50 Event! will be launched on the Chinese car market in 2016, priced around 700.000 yuan, which is about the same as the Tesla Model S costs in China.

The Qiantu K50 Event! is based on the CH Auto Event concept that debuted last year on the Beijing Auto Show. Production was confirmed in October last year. The company that will build the cars is called Qiantu Qiche (前途汽车), which literally translates as ‘Future Auto’.

Qiantu had three cars on show: a racy variant with a shipload of extra wings and two standard cars that look pretty much like last year’s concept. The Qiantu K50 Event! is powered by an electric motor with an output of 400hp and 650nm, sending power to the rear wheels.

Claimed specifications: top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, 0-100 in five seconds. Range 200 kilometer. Battery: 41.1kWh lithium-ion. Charging takes six hours on 220V. Curb weight is 1685 kilo.

Diamonds come standard on 90 million yuan ‘Fast & Furious 7’ supercar

Diamonds come standard on 90 million yuan 'Fast & Furious 7' supercar

The appearance in Shanghai of the diamond-embedded supercar seen flying between buildings in the trailer for the new high-octane Hollywood action film Fast & Furious 7 set off a social media storm.

Photographs of the limited edition Lykan HyperSport, which were taken at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, were rapidly shared on social media app WeChat and the mainland’s Twitter-like microblog service.

Images of the luxury supercar, with a top speed of 385 km/h, showed its headlights, which have a row of diamonds embedded inside.

Including taxes and other costs, the Lykan HyperSport supercar, built by Lebanese carmaker W Motors could expect to attract a price of the 90 million yuan (HK$114 million) if sold in China.

Only seven of the supercars will be manufactured, and it is still uncertain where they will go on sale – or just who will be able to buy one.

The Lykan HyperSport is powered by a twin-turbo flat-six 3.7 litre engine. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.

But those features were not the source of greatest attention – instead, it was the diamonds embedded in the car’s headlights. The headlights, with titanium LED blades, include 420 15carat diamonds for a “lavish and luxurious finish”, the carmaker’s website says.

Yet would-be buyers who take a shine to the diamonds can also choose to have other precious stones, including yellow diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds “integrated into the vehicle upon request”.

So far no one knows why the car was in Shanghai – and whether the appearance of the pictures on mainland social media is part of a marketing ploy to sell the car and promote the seventh film in the hit franchise, which will be released on the mainland on April 12. Universal Pictures, the producers of the film, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

“It could just be another case of Chinese tuhao [rich people] showing off their wealth,” one microblogger sniffed.

Millionaire supercar owners caught smuggling cars to China for illegal road races

Millionaire supercar owners caught smuggling cars to China for illegal road races

A gang of 13 millionaire supercar owners who took their Ferraris, McLarens and Lamborghinis to China to take part in illegal races have been given suspended sentences after they sped along private roads at 160mph.

The gang – all men and aged between 36 and 62 –  crossed from Hong Kong to Shenzhen in southern China to stage the illegal race.

They reportedly told police they had travelled to China because the roads in Hong Kong were too narrow for racing.

Each was given a prison sentence of between one and six months, suspended for two years, at Bao’an District People’s Court after they admitted driving at 160mph on private roads. Other motorists reported their ‘sheer terror’ when they tore past.

Police seized 12 of the vehicles, which were stopped in November last year.

Van driver Wang Ho, 39, said: ‘I was doing about 100 kph (60mph) but they overtook me like I was standing still.’

He added: ‘My van literally shook when they went past me on both sides because of the speed they were doing.

‘They were going so fast their number plates were a blur.

‘I thought if they made even one small mistake at that speed they would kill me.’

Other motorists said it appeared the drivers ‘thought they were on a race track.’

The drivers have been fined around £70,000 and were warned by a judge they may not be so lucky next time.
