Super boys from India help design 900 HP supercar

Four students from India have acquired overnight fame after a futuristic car they designed as part of a team project earned rave reviews at an international motor expo in Switzerland.

The master’s students, three of whom are from Mumbai and one is from Pune, study at an Italian design school and collaborated with a magazine from the country on the project.

The sleek-looking car was designed by a group of 11 post-graduate students of Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), a design institute in Italy. Amongst the eleven team members are Marshin Bhatt (25), Rahul Sadwelkar (23), and Sunny Ramrakhiani (31) – all from Mumbai, and Gaurav Jagtap (26), from Pune.

Other designers hail from Poland, China, Israel, Taiwan, Iran and Mexico. The project was the final thesis project for the masters course in transportation design, in collaboration with Italian car magazine, Quattroruote, and garnered rave reviews at the Geneva Motor Show 2015.

“The theme given to us was to design a modern and futuristic car which uses techniques that could make sense in the future. We chose to design a car giving extra attention to safety features not only for the driver, but also pedestrians,” said Sadwelkar, who spoke to mid-day from Italy.

The 23-year-old moved to IED in 2010 and, after completing his bachelors in car design in 2013, joined the same institute for a master’s course on scholarship basis.

Bhatt, a student of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in Andheri, joined IED in 2013. “I used to sketch cars since I was in school and had my own collection of posters and magazines. Work is fun when you do what you always wanted to do,” he said, adding that his family is proud to see his dreams turn into reality. Bhatt hopes to move on to bigger challenges. “Who knows, I may open a design consultancy firm one day.”

The hood of the yacht opens to release solar panels that can provide power to the vessel.

The panels are also sturdy enough to act as helipad, or a performance space. The yacht also comes with a custom supercar known as the Xhibit-G.

The car designer who turned a sailfish into a supercar

Frank Stephenson is design director of McLaren Automotive, the carmakers behind a range of highly prized, high-priced cars. While on holiday in the Caribbean, he noticed a sailfish on a wall in the resort where he was staying.

A man working there told Stephenson that he was proud to have caught the fish because it was so fast. Stephenson was intrigued – he began doing some research on the species to find out why it was so quick.

On the way back to London, Stephenson stopped off in Miami and went down to a local fishing village, where, in a stroke of luck, a local fisherman had just caught a sailfish. He bought it, sent it downtown to get it stuffed and eventually got it delivered to the scanning department of the McLaren Automotive aerodynamics laboratory in Surrey – where the carmakers set to work trying to learn the secrets of the super-speed fish’s abilities.

The analysis revealed that the scales on the sailfish’s skin generate little vortices that result in the fish being enveloped in a bubble of air instead of denser water. This reduced drag allows the fish to move even faster. McLaren’s designers applied the same texture as the scales of the sailfish to the inside of the ducts that lead into the engine of their P1 hypercar.

This increased the volume of air going into the engine by 17%, improving the car’s efficiency: the P1 has hybrid engines creating 903 horsepower and thus needs large amounts of air pumped into the engine to help combustion and engine cooling.

The P1 also borrowed from the sailfish little ‘diplets’ on the torso of the fin where it meets the tail fin that the fish uses to straighten out the flow of pockets of air and water that move past it. This, Stephenson says, made the car more aerodynamic.

Nature has had millions of years to evolve its designs, says Stephenson, which is why he is trying to incorporate those tricks into his projects. “It just simply makes sense,” he says. “How can a lizard go upside down and stick to the surface for example? Well, if you can find out why, you can just apply that technology to the tyres of the car such that when the surfaces are wet, there’s no way that the car can slide.”

If Darth Vader Had A Car…

If Darth Vader Had A Car...

If Darth Vader had a car, this concept by Ondrej Jirec would be it. Jirec is a Czech student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Its name is the Cadillac Estill, a futuristic super car concept that, according to Jirec, links to the history of the Cadillac brand but is not retro.

Here’s how he describes it:

“The desired result was to create a concept that maintains clues from the history of the Cadillac brand and introduces a futuristic and fresh vision. The history clues were a fuselage suspended between two long body sides – a good example is the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado.

“Taking this pure form study, stripping down from all details, and taking it as a building theme for the whole concept, those were the main inspiration for the development of this concept.

“The interior layout is built around the driver experience. The passenger seat is pushed slightly back so the driver can reach the feeling of being in a true race car, inspired by the Cadillac Le Mans heritage.”

Ondrej Jirec received a Mr. Otis and Mrs. Bettina Chandler full endowed scholarship from 2008 to 2013 and has worked at General Motors and Honda R&D in California, Aston Martin in the UK, and Stile Bertone in Torino, Italy.

The Lamborghini Inspired Super Yacht

The Lamborghini Inspired Super Yacht

A Lamborghini-inspired speedboat is being described as the apex of nautical engineering. The 15-metre sleek, innovative, gutsy vessel carries a $1.1 million price tag and is owned by rags-to-riches mogul Gino Gargiulo.

The styling is inspired by the Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 anniversary model and the rest of the design also resembles the Aventador, while its interior is the epitome of luxury.

The supercar yacht was created by Marine Technology Inc. (MTI), who brought it to life by drawing up designs that take the most iconic features of the luxury automobile and transferring them to a working boat, capable of traveling 300 kilometres per hour.

Speedboats like this are an interesting sub-category of yachts. The immense power of the boat limits the number of people who could own one because owners would have to be thoroughly trained in order to safely operate it. Not to mention the price tag.

From the driver’s seat and the plush leather interior could easily be mistaken for the car, which is the intention. The distinctive yellow paintwork is also identical, and seeing the two super vehicles together is a breathtaking sight.

This is becoming a bit of a trend, with other supercar inspired yachts emerging all the time. If you could have your own, which supercar would you model yours on?

Lambo’s Design Chief Discusses Huracán Supercar DNA

Lamborghini Huracán design concept: interview with Filippo PeriniDespite the fact that the supercar has been out there for three months now, the Huracan appears to still be under the magnifying glass with some Lamborghini ‘purists’ say it is too simple.

However Lamborghini’s head of design, Filippo Perini, has released a video explaining that the Huracan was designed to be pure, simplistic, and functional.

For example, the subtly hidden intakes and scoops not only enhance aerodynamics but also lend to sleeker look. It appears that the Italian automaker does, in fact, know what is’ doing.

A car that will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 202 mph is fairly impressive. Yes it is sleeker than other models but it makes up for being less aggressive by being physically smaller.

It’s this diminutive stature that makes it an easier car to drive. It also manages to be faster than its predecessor, the Gallardo, while using the same V10 engine.

All gripes aside, the Huracán has certainly proven itself. There have already been 1,000 orders received so far and it looks like Lamborghini wants to blow the previous Gallardo sales out of the water. At least 14,022 Huracáns will need to be sold in order to beat the Gallardo’s all-time record.

Here’s that video:
