China’s First Supercar debuts on the Shanghai Auto Show

This is the Qiantu K50 Event!, China’s first home-grown electric supercar, which debuted on the Shanghai Auto Show. The Qiantu K50 Event! will be launched on the Chinese car market in 2016, priced around 700.000 yuan, which is about the same as the Tesla Model S costs in China.

The Qiantu K50 Event! is based on the CH Auto Event concept that debuted last year on the Beijing Auto Show. Production was confirmed in October last year. The company that will build the cars is called Qiantu Qiche (前途汽车), which literally translates as ‘Future Auto’.

Qiantu had three cars on show: a racy variant with a shipload of extra wings and two standard cars that look pretty much like last year’s concept. The Qiantu K50 Event! is powered by an electric motor with an output of 400hp and 650nm, sending power to the rear wheels.

Claimed specifications: top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, 0-100 in five seconds. Range 200 kilometer. Battery: 41.1kWh lithium-ion. Charging takes six hours on 220V. Curb weight is 1685 kilo.

Video: The Sound Of A Million Dollar Electric Supercar

Video: The Sound Of A Million Dollar Electric Supercar

Just eight 1,088 horsepower Rimac Concept_One have been built since early 2013, and only 80 more will be built at $1 million each. So what does a million-dollar electric car sound like at full-throttle? A lot cooler than you might think, actually.

Though it’s brief clip, it’s one of the few where the Concept_One has been able to really let loose, as most demonstrations of this electric supercar have been limited to public streets.

As you might imagine, flexing 1,088 horsepower and a downright inconsiderate 2,800 lb-ft of instant torque on a narrow thoroughfare is probably not the best idea. But on the track it’s a different story, and here we can really see the Concept_One ring it outs four electric motors.

Rimac claims the Concept_One can zoom from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.8 seconds, even faster than the mighty Tesla P85D, which has become something of a measuring stick for speed these days.

A million bucks also gets you as much as 310 miles per charge, though Rimac has plans well beyond just a single supercar. The Croatian electric automaker wants to supply electric powertrain and drivetrain components to other automakers, and the technology Rimac is pioneering is even being used to improve the lives of the disabled.

Tesla’s Electric Supercar Has A Hidden ‘James Bond’ Mode

Tesla's Electric Supercar Has A Hidden 'James Bond' Mode

Elon Musk likes James Bond, so much so that he spent $1m on the famous Lotus Esprit that converts into a submarine.

Well to pay true homage to his favourite car the billionaire entrepreneur hid a rather special easter egg within the software for the Tesla Model S.

First buy a £49,900 Tesla Model S. Then press and hold the ‘Tesla’ button at the top of the giant display panel and you’ll be asked to enter an access code. Simply enter ‘007’ and then go to the Suspension settings page.

What was at one point a picture of your Model S is now a side view of the iconic Lotus. Oh and the ride height switch? That’s been changed to Depth (Leagues) of which there are two options for 10,000 or 20,000.

It goes without saying that this is all kinds of excellent. Tesla didn’t have to include the easter egg, in much the same way that the Model S sound system doesn’t have to go all the way up to ’11’ but it does, and that’s what matters.

Tesla aren’t the only company to include neat easter eggs in their products. Google’s Chromebook Pixel will delight you with a light show if you input the ‘Konami Code’ into the keyboard while Apple Maps in London now features a Big Ben that shows the real time and a London Eye that actually spins.

Carpenter makes Lamborghini style super car entirely out of Wood

Carpenter makes Lamborghini style super car entirely out of Wood

A Lamborghini-loving carpenter realised he was never going to have the cash to buy a £260,000 supercar – so he made one out of WOOD.

Super car fan Yu Jietao stripped the body off an electric car then redesigned it using hand-carved rosewood.

And after he hit the road in China’s Jiangxi province, he quickly attracted media attention – and numerous offers to buy the car.

He said: “One person offered me what I would consider to be a small fortune, and more than enough to buy a real hot rod but I decided I don’t want to sell it.

“My wife really loves it as well and so we decided to keep it.”

Police have warned that technically it isn’t licensed because it was not made by an approved car manufacturer.

But that has not deterred Yu, 26, who is planning to challenge the wooden supercardecision.

He said: “I didn’t really copy any car when I made it but I guess I wanted a sort of Lamborghini feel about it.

“It is a topless roadster so isn’t suitable for all weathers, and has beetle-wing doors. It measures about four-metres-long, 1.5 metres wide and is just 1.5 metres tall.”

Audi Resurrects Electric R8 Supercar

Audi resurrects electric R8 supercarGreat news R8 fans! Audi has gone back on its decision not to sell an all-electric version of the R8 and now says it will include it in the line-up for the next generation of its acclaimed supercar.

Audi’s technical head Ulrich Hackenberg announced the news earlier this week adding: “this is a decisive step toward everyday practicality.”

The brand succeeding in boosting the E-tron’s range from 134 miles to 280 miles, which is why it reversed its decision to abandon the car and instead offer it as a halo model for the next-generation.

No time-frame has been given for when the second-generation R8 will be launched, but Audi has said it will be built on the same modular platform as the LamborghiniHuracan. The two are likely to share engines, but the E-tron battery drivetrain is not likely to be included in the Italian’s range.

Audi had been left behind in the race among the German premium makers to produce a halo, new-energy sports model after canning the production R8 E-tron last year.

BMW will deliver the first of its range-extended i8 electric car in June costing from £99,895, while Mercedes is already selling the Electric Drive version of the SLS AMG supercar for around £350,000.

Could The World’s Fastest Supercar Soon Be Electric?

Rimac Concept_One

Introducing the Rimac Concept_One. You might miss it, it’s that fast. This radical electric concept car could accelerate faster than all but two of the fastest supercars currently in existence.

It’s the brainchild of an award-winning young Croatian designer and its stats could outdo traditional petrol engines cars, let alone other electric ones!

Apparently the car produces 1018 horsepower, can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, has a top speed of 305 kph (190 mph), and can travel 600 kilometers (372 miles) on a single charge.

First unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September, 2011, the Concept One is an electric vehicle that aims to be even faster than the Bugatti Veyron.

The notion that an electric car could soon outperform the best petrol vehicles in existence is certainly exciting. When the production car is released into the wild in the not-too-distant future, the eyes of the world will undoubtedly be watching.

Saab Is Officially Back In Business!

saab-9-3

Yes it’s exciting news for Saab lovers. The new owners of the once beloved carmaker have decided to start the production line moving again with its 9-3 sedan model at its Trollhattan factory in western Sweden, albeit at a “humble” pace.

The entire first batch has been pre-sold to Chinese government agencies but there’s encouraging talk that the established supply chain could sustain an increased capacity.

In case you didn’t know, Saab went bankrupt in December 2011 and was bought by a Chinese-Swedish investment group, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (Nevs), last year.

Don’t expect anything too futuristic yet though. The NEVS 9-3 will use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (despite the ‘Electric’ in the new owner’s name) as well as the same ‘Epsilon’ 9-3 body (which is virtually prehistoric) for now. Shame.

Saab Logo

However the firm is initially making petrol-powered version of the car with the aim of launching an electric version later. That’s more like it.

You won’t start to see brand new ‘Saab’ branded vehicles on UK roads though – as part of the agreement drawn up for the NEVS takeover, the new owner isn’t allowed to use the badge nor the Saab name.

Even so, it’s good to see you back, Manufacturer Formerly Known As Saab.
