007 Number Plate Sells For £240k At Auction

A licence plate with the code number of Ian Fleming’s heroic spy, James Bond, has sold at auction for what is thought to be a record amount.

The Guernsey plate, 007, sold for £240,000, believed to be the most paid at a public auction in Guernsey.

The winning bidder of the number only plate wants to remain anonymous.

The sum falls short of the UK record of £518,000, but exceeded the expectation of auctioneers on the evening who estimated the value at £60,000.

It was a new issue States of Guernsey plate which feature white numerals on a black background.

One bidder, who withdrew at £200,000, dropped out as he was concerned there could be copyright problems from the producers of the James Bond film franchise, Eon Productions.

He did not want to be named but said: “I’ve got an Aston Martin and if I was seen to be promoting that reg, maybe renting it out for the day, over time I could make the cost back.

“When it got over £200,000 I realised there could be a risk that Eon Productions could come after me.”

Actor Daniel Craig will reprise his role as the superspy in the upcoming 24th official James Bond film, spectre in October.

James Bond has driven a number of cars, but the most famous is the silver grey Aston Martin DB5, first seen in Goldfinger.

Traffic cops seize £250,000 Lamborghini

The driver of a £250,000 supercar was left standing by the side of the road after it was seized by police in Warwickshire. Traffic cops who pulled over the 217mph Lamborghini Aventador in Kenilworth town centre found that his licence had been revoked.

The driver, a man in his mid-30s, was summoned to appear in court at a later date. The question of whether he was driving with no insurance is still being investigated. He was left to make his own way home after a large crowd had gathered to watch.

Officers also discovered there were outstanding finance payments on the 6.5-litre V12 car – one of only 4,000 ever built – and which can do 0-60mph in under three seconds. It will now be sold at auction to pay off the finance company.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather and singers Justin Bieber and Kanye West and are among some of the car’s celebrity owners. Pc Richard Prior, of Warwickshire Police’s Operational Patrol Unit, said: “I’ve pulled over a Bentley Continental before, but this tops it.”

Pc Prior and a colleague were on routine patrol on Wednesday afternoon when their marked car’s ‘automatic number plate recognition’ system (ANPR) flagged up the Lamborghini.

“We saw him on the main road through Kenilworth and stopped him outsideKenilworth Castle,” said the officer. He pulled over straightaway. He got out and was very pleasant, very co-operative. He explained the car was not his. Said he had borrowed it.

“Our investigations showed his driving licence had been revoked by the DVLA. He said he didn’t know anything about it, but was unsurprisingly fine about it because it wasn’t his car.” Pc Prior added: “There was a joke about who would drive it back, but we got a professional recovery company to take it to a compound in Leamington.”

Driving licences can be revoked for medical reasons or for failing to keep personal details up-to-date.
