World's Fastest Supercars Brave Rain and Mud for Annual 'Secret' Meetup

Owners of some of the world’s most sought-after supercars braved torrential rain and mud to show off their vehicles at an annual invitation-only event.

A Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari and Bugatti Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition – one of only five in the world – were among the 200 high-performance cars on show at the ‘Secret Supercar Meet’, held at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome and Proving Ground, Leicestershire.

The get-together, organised by supercar owners club Supercar Driver, raised nearly £5,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital in Sheffield, which offers care and support to children with shortened life expectancy.

Event organiser Adam Thorby, owner of Supercar Driver, said it was a testament to the group’s members that the cars were on show despite the weather, which could potentially damage the vehicles.

He said: ‘The turnout from members was staggering considering the forecast which was heavy rain all day. You would be lucky to see any one of those cars out in the height of summer, let alone the full group in less than ideal conditions.

‘It is testament to our members who had committed to the event and have bought their cars to use them, whatever the weather.’

The fleet of vehicles, which boast a combined worth more than £20million, also included a Mercedes AMG 300SL that was custom made for the Sultan of Brunei.

Car Dealer John Collins recently bought the most expense number plate ever sold at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) auction.

The registration plate “25 O” went for £518,00 but Mr Collins admits that he would have spent up to £1m.

He said: “I hate to say it but it could have been the first £1m number plate. I’m glad it wasn’t, but I hope one day it will be.”

Mr Collins is not the only motor enthusiast buying a personalised plate as an investment, according to brokers who say the popularity and value of some plates have been rising.

Some drivers buy them as a gift for a loved one, others use them to promote their business, and some are keen to cover up the age of their vehicle with a personalised plate.

Our favourite at the moment is the above MUH5IN number plate, which currently has an asking price of £16,995 ONO on ApnaPlates.com.

It’s a plate to be proud of and unlike your car, it won’t depreciate in value!

The Acura NSX supercar press kits are selling for $275 on eBay

The Acura NSX supercar press kits are selling for $275 on eBay

After a decade of absence from the automotive market, the Acura NSX supercar generated much excitement when it was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Only a few days after the news broke, a number of journalists – or at least, people who were accredited as journalists at the show’s press preview on Monday and Tuesday – put their NSX press kits up for sale on eBay.

It’s common for automakers to offer elaborate press kits when they introduce new models, and the NSX kit did not disappoint. Packaged in a lovely tin box, it contains a USB thumb drive loaded with pertinent model information and a small metal model of the car.

One sold on eBay today for $167.50, and other online auctions ending later have received bids well in excess of $100. There’s even one enterprising individual offering a buy-it-now price of $250 for one of the kits.

Do you think it’s right for journalists to sell the press kits on eBay?

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

‘Supercar season’ has long been the domain of the super-rich – but more Arab visitors to the UK are now entering the fast lane by hiring luxury motors for a fraction of the cost.

Visitors from the Arabian Gulf are known for showing off their high-value motors over summer, with some spending up to Dh70,000 to fly their cars to London for just a few weeks.

Supercar marques ranging from Aston Martin to Bugatti were spotted in areas like Knightsbridge and Mayfair last year, sporting number-plates from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

Some local residents have complained about the annual “invasion”, saying that the cars are noisy, and that some drivers are dangerous or do not pay local parking fines and speeding tickets.

The London-based Signature Car Hire, which has one of the largest fleets of luxury cars in the UK, says it has seen a “growing market” in bookings from Middle Eastern customers.

Dee Bhatia, the firm’s founder and chief executive, said his customer base has included royals from the UAE and Qatar, although he declined to specify names.

“They are discerning clients who know exactly what they want. We have been known to buy a car specifically because a VIP client requested it,” Bhatia said.

Rival UK-based rental firm Supercar Experiences also reports a steady increase in customers from the Middle East.

It offers models like the Porsche 911 Carrera or Range Rover Vogue to hire for around Dh1,400 a day, while the Ferrari 430 Spider F1 goes for £595 (Dh3,300).

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700 — the firm’s most expensive car available for general hire — is available for a whopping £1,995.00 per 24 hours.

Nik Hardwick, managing director of Supercar Experiences, said the firm had seen a lot a clients from the UAE, mainly during the summer months.

“We’ve had the princes, the sheikhs, the billionaires,” he said. “They’ve all got cars back home. But a lot of people decide to hire rather than bringing their own cars over.”

This man built himself a flashy supercar from £100 Ford Granada

This man built himself a flashy supercar for just £100 (ish)

It looks every inch the flashy supercar… but this is actually a 1990 Ford Granada.

Nick Truman bought the ageing motor for £100 and used it as the base for his copy of the 200mph Pagani Zonda.

The 53-year-old father-of-three spent £15,000 and thousands of hours fitting the banger with an Audi engine and luxury features – but can’t drive it as it is not road legal.

The IT specialist from Iver, Buckinghamshire, said: ‘A lot of blood and sweat went into it. One day I lost the tip of my index finger in the turbo and it came out of the exhaust.’

‘All I wanted to do was make a coffee table, but I ended up building a car.

‘It was a fun project to do with my children although my wife wasn’t overly impressed.

‘In the first year the project became obsessive. I would do audio calls with the angle grinder in one and the phone in the other.

‘My wife likes the colour and I think she is proud of what has been achieved.

‘People who drive past and always slam their brakes on and look at it. If you have never seen a Zonda before, you might not know it wasn’t one at first look.

‘The body isn’t perfect but it makes people smile and my children love it.’

While it is not road legal in the UK, the car sits on Nick’s driveway next to his classic Ferrari 308 GT4 Dino.

He eventually hopes to take it to a drag strip or the Top Gear airfield to see how quick it is.

Making of an Indian speedster: Dilip Chhabria

Making of an Indian speedster: Dilip Chhabria

Dilip Chhabria says that nowadays he is often pre occupied with worry and frustration, but when ETPanache met him in his office in Andheri, MIDC, there was excitement in the air. After four years of planning, three years of execution and a delay of one-and-a-half year, his company -DC Designs -is all set to roll out the first made-in-India super car, Avanti. Priced at Rs 40 lakh approximately, the company will start delivering cars to customers from March 2015.

“There is a saying that although you want to buy a sports car when you are young, you can only afford it when you are old. This is a sports car which will be the third or fourth car in the family and probably, a father’s gift to his son when he comes of age,” says Chhabria. Designed for the Indian road, Avanti comes with a ground clearance of 170 mm. Chhabria says, “There is no way a speed breaker can stop this car”.

From the looks of it, the car could easily be mistaken for a Lamborghini or Ferrari. “Except,” says Chhabria, “The price of this car would barely amount to the tax component of any other international sports car. It also doesn’t have that kind of raw horse power (500 bhp). Primarily because, you don’t need that in India.”

Chhabria is producing about 500 cars this year from the company’s facility in Pune and expects to take this number to 2,000 in the next four years. The company has received bookings for 450 cars, of which 300 are export orders.

Japanese Builder Puts TRD Nascar Engine Into Lexus LFA Supercar

This Lexus LFA is believed to be the most expensive exotic to ever be transformed into a professional drifter.

Created by Yoichi Imamura for the upcoming D1 Grand Prix season, the LFA has been gutted, with its gorgeous, wailing V10 replaced with a TRD Nascar motor and mated to a dog box.

Considering the expense and effort that must have gone into the build, let’s hope the LFA drifter loves going sideways.
