Video: Meet the M-Zero, India's First Supercar

Introducing Mean Metal Motors – an automotive start-up which is working on India’s first supercar. Called the M-Zero, it has 4 teams from 4 countries working on turning this dream in to reality.

While the teams in Portugal and Italy take care of body and styling, the UK team looks after the simulations and analysis. The remaining one i.e. the team in India, is responsible for the engine, transmission, aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, electronics, and energy storage systems.

The M-Zero will get a light-weight carbon-fibre monocoque tub chassis, which will give provide the required rigidity. Though it will be designed by these folks at Mean Metal Motors, it will then be given to various parts manufacturers for production.

About the engine – it will be a parallel hybrid mid-engined supercar. Sarthak Paul, founder and director, said they’re planning on getting either a 4.0-litre AMG V8 bi-turbo or the 4.8-litre NA V10, though the procurement process is yet to be initiated. Sarthak adds that they are targeting the 500+bhp mark for the power output.

Since this is a parallel hybrid supercar, there will be an electric motor involved. The electric motor will be capable of producing approximately 250bhp, which, in turn, will give the M-Zero a combined power tally of 750+bhp. The total torque developed will be 900Nm.

Mean Metal Motors is currently looking for funds, and intends to raise $7 million in the first round of funding, which will help them make their first prototype. The manufacturing facility, sadly, will not be in India but in a Scandinavian country. Also, the market they’re looking at is Europe.

Celebrating The Last Bugatti Veyron

Celebrating The Last Bugatti Veyron

It’s been 10 whole years since Bugatti launched the Veyron, forever setting new standards of luxury, exclusivity, and performance. It has long since become the benchmark for top speed and now, as it ends its production run, Bugatti will celebrate a decade of changing the game with the premiere of the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse “La Finale,” the 450th and final Veyron.

“The Veyron is a showcase for technology, design and art – in keeping with the Bugatti brand’s values of ’Art, Forme, Technique’,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. This showcase also brings a high degree of individual exclusivity, and this version is no exception.

This final Veyron will feature a similar, yet distinct black and red two-tone color scheme to that found on the first Veyron chassis. The front wing panels, doors and side intakes are made from black exposed carbon fiber while the rest will be a deep red carbon fiber, something no previous Veyron has featured.

Inside, the La Finale is upholstered in a light beige leather, contrasted by a red tone called “hot spur,” which appears on the arm rests, instrument panel and dashboard.  The red carbon fiber from the interior also accents the inside, found on the center tunnel and on other inserts.

“La Finale” embroidery can be found on the head restraints as well as etched in the black carbon fiber door sill strips. Topping off all the unique attributes is the Bugatti elephant cast in bronze and featured on the stowage compartment panel, under which “450/450” is painted in black.

It goes without saying that the Bugatti Veyron La Finale will feature it’s main attraction: the 8.0-liter  W16 engine that packs four turbochargers, 64 valves, and it capable of producing 1,183 horsepower and a staggering 1,106 pound-feet of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels by way of a seven-speed dual-clutch sequential gearbox. All this results in the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse skyrocketing to its record holding 267.8 mph top speed.

“With the next Bugatti model, we are aiming to consolidate and expand the market-leading position we have established with the Veyron,” the Bugatti President Dürheimer states. “Our challenge is to make the best even better.”

Police have charged Mr Joska with numerous offences, and local media said he had put the parts online to try and get back some of the money he is going to have to pay in compensation and fines.

According to police because Mr Joska was travelling at an illegal high-speed, the insurance company has refused to pay for the damage.

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

The booming car rental business behind London’s ‘supercar season’

‘Supercar season’ has long been the domain of the super-rich – but more Arab visitors to the UK are now entering the fast lane by hiring luxury motors for a fraction of the cost.

Visitors from the Arabian Gulf are known for showing off their high-value motors over summer, with some spending up to Dh70,000 to fly their cars to London for just a few weeks.

Supercar marques ranging from Aston Martin to Bugatti were spotted in areas like Knightsbridge and Mayfair last year, sporting number-plates from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

Some local residents have complained about the annual “invasion”, saying that the cars are noisy, and that some drivers are dangerous or do not pay local parking fines and speeding tickets.

The London-based Signature Car Hire, which has one of the largest fleets of luxury cars in the UK, says it has seen a “growing market” in bookings from Middle Eastern customers.

Dee Bhatia, the firm’s founder and chief executive, said his customer base has included royals from the UAE and Qatar, although he declined to specify names.

“They are discerning clients who know exactly what they want. We have been known to buy a car specifically because a VIP client requested it,” Bhatia said.

Rival UK-based rental firm Supercar Experiences also reports a steady increase in customers from the Middle East.

It offers models like the Porsche 911 Carrera or Range Rover Vogue to hire for around Dh1,400 a day, while the Ferrari 430 Spider F1 goes for £595 (Dh3,300).

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700 — the firm’s most expensive car available for general hire — is available for a whopping £1,995.00 per 24 hours.

Nik Hardwick, managing director of Supercar Experiences, said the firm had seen a lot a clients from the UAE, mainly during the summer months.

“We’ve had the princes, the sheikhs, the billionaires,” he said. “They’ve all got cars back home. But a lot of people decide to hire rather than bringing their own cars over.”

Making of an Indian speedster: Dilip Chhabria

Making of an Indian speedster: Dilip Chhabria

Dilip Chhabria says that nowadays he is often pre occupied with worry and frustration, but when ETPanache met him in his office in Andheri, MIDC, there was excitement in the air. After four years of planning, three years of execution and a delay of one-and-a-half year, his company -DC Designs -is all set to roll out the first made-in-India super car, Avanti. Priced at Rs 40 lakh approximately, the company will start delivering cars to customers from March 2015.

“There is a saying that although you want to buy a sports car when you are young, you can only afford it when you are old. This is a sports car which will be the third or fourth car in the family and probably, a father’s gift to his son when he comes of age,” says Chhabria. Designed for the Indian road, Avanti comes with a ground clearance of 170 mm. Chhabria says, “There is no way a speed breaker can stop this car”.

From the looks of it, the car could easily be mistaken for a Lamborghini or Ferrari. “Except,” says Chhabria, “The price of this car would barely amount to the tax component of any other international sports car. It also doesn’t have that kind of raw horse power (500 bhp). Primarily because, you don’t need that in India.”

Chhabria is producing about 500 cars this year from the company’s facility in Pune and expects to take this number to 2,000 in the next four years. The company has received bookings for 450 cars, of which 300 are export orders.

There’s no coming back for this red beauty. After veering off the road, the 36-year-old driver of this bright red Ferrari F430 Spider crashed into a lake somewhere in Austria.

Reports on the ground suggest the Prancing Horse careered down a 70 meter hill before plunging head first into the two-meter-deep pond.

Thankfully, the driver escaped unhurt, and was able to call the emergency services from a nearby house. Firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, removing the Italian exotic.

While it appears to have minimal cosmetic damage, a drowned engine means the supercar will likely never run again.
