Discover the paranoid world of London's super-rich

Heyrick Bond Gunning – yes, that really is his name – visits Mayfair most days, but he does not come to buy. He comes to sell. The imposing 44-year-old, a former Grenadier Guards officer, is one of a new breed of salesmen.

He’s selling building and contents protection, but not the kind you’re used to. As the managing director of security firm Salamanca Risk Management, he sells a guarantee that you and your family will never again be bothered by anyone or anything you don’t want to be bothered by.

Business is booming because billionaires are a paranoid bunch. Take one who recently moved to Mayfair. ‘He wanted everything, from protection from cyber hacking through to physical intrusion and kidnapping,’ says Bond Gunning.

‘We ended up installing fingerprint-activated locks for family members and programmable keys for staff that limit the time they are allowed into the property and the rooms they are able to enter and exit.

‘Inside and outside we installed 24-hour monitored CCTV cameras that are so hi-tech they can tell the difference between a dog, cat and a person. In the garden there are thermal-imaging cameras that can detect heat sources in the undergrowth. One thing intruders can’t hide is the heat of their bodies.

‘Should an intruder evade the cameras or ignore the warnings they automatically broadcast, the property itself is protected by bulletproof glass and alarm sensors in all rooms.

‘There is a bullet, gas and bombproof panic or safe room, with its own food and water, medical supplies and communications, and an impregnable supply of fresh air. Just in case the family cannot make it there in time, key rooms are sealed by reinforced shutters.’

The bill for such peace of mind? A cool £1m.

Introducing The Supercar For Superyachts

Introducing The Supercar For Superyachts

It’s a given that a number of the gleaming vessels on show at this month’s Monaco Yacht Show (taking place from September 23 to 26) will feature helicopters on deck – in superyacht circles having a helipad and complementary aircraft has become almost de rigueur. More likely then, to impress a roving billionaire eager to pick up a new boating accessory is a novel supercar created specifically for superyachts.

Launched by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons in collaboration with Briggs Automotive Company, the Marine Edition Mono is capable of reaching 170mph and can go from 0-60mph in just 2.7 seconds yet weights only 580kg. That relatively light weight means it can be hoisted fairly easily onto land and deployed to discover the surrounding streets when the yacht docks, but for superyacht owners who prefer to spend their time at sea its main purpose could simply be to serve as the ultimate showboating frivolity.

To make sure it looks the part wherever it ends up, owners can customise the interior and exterior to match their yachts’ colour schemes. The seat will be made to measure, for example, and the name and port of the superyacht with which the car is associated will be etched on the car’s rear wing.

In response to the unconventional perch the Marine Edition Mono will occupy, other technical features have been subtly adapted too. Protective coatings on the car’s body and all exposed metallic components will protect against salty air and water and corrosion. Handily, the car is also supplied with a carbon-fibre crane arm that is compatible with all yacht crane systems and which can be used to transport the automobile onto solid ground.

Though none of the newly launched made-to-order cars has been commissioned as yet, Camper & Nicholsons says that the response has been enthusiastic: “We have had a great response and are in discussions with several interested parties.” Those who do wish to purchase one of the cars can expect to pay about £500,000 (plus delivery and VAT where applicable). The cars will be designed and built in Liverpool and manufacturers expect they will be able to produce one car per month if built to their standardised specification.

London’s sky pool will let the super-rich swim through the air

London's sky pool will let the super-rich swim through the air

Developers in London are building what they claim is the world’s first “sky pool” — a 25-meter-long swimming pool suspended 10 stories in the air between two blocks of luxury flats.

The transparent pool at Embassy Gardens will be three meters deep with a water depth of 1.2 meters, and will be constructed with the help of aquarium designers using 20-cm-thick glass.

The pool will allow residents to swim between the development’s roof-top bar, spa, and orangery (a walkway will be available as well), with prices for apartments and penthouses in the complex starting at £602,000 ($942,572).

“My vision for the sky pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering. I wanted to do something that had never been done before,” said Sean Mulryan, chairman and CEO of the Ballymore Group, the project’s developers. “The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London.”

Although the sky pool is certainly architecturally striking, the project can also be seen as symbolic of London’s housing problems, with developers in the city often promising to build affordable homes in central areas only to focus on luxury apartments instead.

Embassy Gardens itself is part of the larger Nine Elms development in southwest London, which is intended to regenerate the inner-city district of Battersea. Instead, say critics, homes in the $23 billion development are being marketed primarily to wealthy buyers in Asia and the Middle East, with locals simply priced out of the market.

Outrageous ways the super rich spend their money

Outrageous ways the super rich spend their money

How do you spend your money if you’re a billionaire?

That’s what Robert Frank, host of “Secret Lives of the Super Rich,” tries to uncover on a CNBC show, which gives viewers VIP access into the extravagant lives of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Business Insider UK sorted through clips of the show and CNBCs Instagram account, @cnbcsuperrich, and picked out the most lavish expenditures they could find.

Here are some of the most outrageous…

The latest toy for the super rich is a craft that flies underwater. “The minute we went under water, everything felt natural and calm, and it was just like flying,” said host Robert Frank, who got to give it a whirl.

Former tech CEO and avid car collector Antoine Dominic is one of the three lucky people in the world who owns a Lamborghini Veneno, the priciest production car on the road as of 2014. He bought this $4 million car without even seeing it ahead of time, and didn’t take it out for a spin until Robert Frank and CNBC begged for a ride. You can see clips from the maiden voyage here.

Safaris don’t necessarily mean bumpy jeep rides anymore. The super rich have the option of taking a three-week private jet tour of Africa, which includes home-cooked meals from top notch chefs, two-bedroom tents with showers and bathrooms, hot air balloon rides, and bottomless champagne.

Video: Single-Seat Sports Car Which Might Fit In Your Private Jet

BAC Mono - Single-Seat Sports Car Which Might Fit In Your Private Jet

The single-seat Formula 1 lookalike BAC Mono is a road-going sports car aimed at the super-rich, with a special version designed to withstand attack from sea-water while parked on your ocean-going yacht. It’s small enough to fit into some private jets too.

If you want to blast your way around a race-track, a single-seater makes lots of sense, but this car is designed for regular on the road use too, albeit with the mandatory safety-helmet. There’s no windscreen to protect you.

I would have thought there was a limited market for a sports car with only one-seat, but the ambitious British-based Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) begs to differ.

Not only that, the company says it has already sold out its production this year of 60 Monos and has orders for 200. It says the Mono won’t compete against cars like top of the range Ferraris. On the contrary, it will be a complement to owners who already probably have a collection of conventional supercars.

The Mono is powered by a 2.5 litre four cylinder gasoline engine producing just over 300 hp and weighs 1,278 lbs. There’s a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox which shifts at the touch of a button. It’s built with carbon fiber composite around a steel safety cell, designed to offer maximum safety with a steel rollover structure and a front carbon “crashbox”.

Naturally, as in a Formula 1 car, you take the steering wheel with you. BAC says the Mono lapped the Formula 1 circuit in Hungary seriously faster than a Porsche 911 GT3, a Ferrari Speciale and a McLaren P1. But BAC says it’s not just its barely imaginable performance that will compel rich buyers, it’s the quality and precision of the engineering.

The BAC Mono will be on display in America later this month at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which runs from August 9 until August 16.

Armored cars: a growing trend among the super rich

Armored cars: a growing trend among the super rich

What is the latest accessory for the budding princeling, oligarch or cartel boss to be conspicuously driving in London using an inconspicuous exterior?

The latest status symbol of the wealthy traversing London’s prestigious West End roads are armored vehicles disguised as your average, every day luxury vehicle. Transforming a common Range Rover, Bentley or Maserati into a vehicle designed to withstand a terrorist attack is becoming popular as well as profitable.

While protecting a precious cargo is nothing new – everyone from presidents to dictators has done it throughout history – the trend is gaining acceptance among those who might not actually need protection, an Economist article noted.

The rising tide of a popular trend among the rich and famous can be seen in worldwide market growth. While such armored cars with bullet proof glass and bomb-proof exteriors amounted to “a handful” of vehicles on the road a few years ago, Mark Burton of International Armoring estimates that in 2015 there will be 7,500 such vehicles sold.

Demand is growing not because the world is more dangerous, the report noted, but because the super-rich – mainly from Russia, Africa and the Middle East – can so easily afford to minimize threats “whether they be real or imaginary.”

Burton competes from his Centerville, Utah headquarters with Streit, a Canadian armored-car company that is teaming with Ares, an Italian firm that adds luxury features to luxury cars, to open a London showroom. The Streit / Ares collaboration, situating the armored luxury vehicle showroom in London’s prestigious West End, has the goal of popularizing the concept of luxury vehicles but doing so in an understated fashion.

While it might be popular to whisper to party goers and friends the benefits of owing a protected vehicle, in public the goal is for the car to blend among the more common luxury vehicles in so as not to become a target.

The cost of outfitting a car that can endure through bomb blasts and bullets alike can run anywhere from $470,000 to $1.6 million additional. And such a car isn’t like your grandfather’s armored car.

With the use of high-tech lighter weight materials means that what previously was a heavy, clunky and hard to maneuver vehicle is not a relative performance machine, not much different handling from how the non-armored version of the same vehicle operates.

Who cares about the congestion charge? How the super-rich get around London

Who cares about the congestion charge? How the super-rich get around London

From a blinged-up Rolls Royce to a Mercedes covered with Swarovski crystals, these pictures give a glimpse of how the super-rich like to travel around London.

The supercars have caught the eye of passers-by, with the garish Mercedes S-Class and a Rolls Royce from Dubai popping up on the streets of Knightsbridge.

A silver Porsche 918 Spyder with Saudi Arabian license plates has also been garnering attention.

But the Mercedes S-Class doesn’t seem to be in quite as good condition as when it was last pictured on MailOnline, with some of the crystals no longer there.

The 2014 CLS 350 used to be owned by Russian business student Daria Radionova until she sold it for £155,000 on eBay last October. It is often seen parked in exclusive parts of London.

A team from Russia had spent 12 hours a day for two months working on customising the car, and Ms Radionova said last September that she was ‘really happy’ with it.

The then 21-year-old added: ‘It gets lots of attention from people walking by and in cars. Sometimes I think they might crash.’

Knightsbridge has become known in recent years for Arab playboys speeding around in cars worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.
