The latest must-have celebrity craze is a £200,000 armour plated Cadillac Escalade that can withstand bullets, bombs and chemical attacks. It shocks anyone who tries to grab its door handles and customers can even choose a gun-port to shoot at people on the outside! Is that a bit creepy or just incredibly cool?
Ex-Spice Girl and America’s Got Talent host Mel B is the latest to join the growing list of celebrities who have parted with vast sums of cash for a specially modified attack-proof Cadillac Escalade, which is capable of destroying the tyres of pursuing vehicles by ejecting small spikes.
The enormous ‘tank-like’ sports utility vehicle will even give an electric shock, up to 240 volts-worth of ‘non-lethal current’, to anyone idiotic enough to grab the door handles. Now this part is really cool – at the push of a button, it will belch out dense white smoke to help the driver evade any pursuing vehicle, and pump out small spikes to puncture their tyres.
Mel B’s specially armoured and fully loaded seven-seater vehicle was delivered to her at her home in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, by the vice-president of the Texas Armoring Corporation in San Antonio. Texas Armoring employs 50 people and customises about 200 vehicles a year, usually for heads of state, politicians, business executives, diplomats and royal families.
Hollywood celebrities and sport stars have sparked a mini-boom in armoured vehicles as the worsening international climate – from chemical strikes in Syria to terrorist attacks in Boston and Kenya – have made them worried about their personal safety.
The likes of Steven Seagal, Tiger Woods and rapper Kanye West have all recently ordered armoured cars of varying protective levels. Apparently some customers have specified pressurised cabins and on-board oxygen supplies to protect against chemical and gas attacks. Now surely that is quite disturbing in anyone’s book…
